Question about Typewriters

1 Answer

Brother EM-601 Carriage was not lifting high enough for corrective tape. Played with it to try and find the problem - couldn't - now ribbon will not advance. Tried replacing ribbon - same problem. Lock clips have been removed. Any ideas/solutions to fix?

I am sorry to say that that is an indication of a worn out lift gear. It is a common repair if you can find a “Brother Authorized” service center it shouldn’t be to expensive. But it’s time to dump the typewriters and go with PDF that can be filled in.

Check that the lift off is properly attached to the ribbon and ribbon is installed properly, If the liittle tabs on the L/O cassette are broken you can use a piece of tape to hold them together.

Display Screen reads "4check printer". Carriage

Check the printwheel to be sure it is properly installed. Remove the ribbon and L/O tape and try it, you are looking for anything in the way of the P/W or carroer.

Hello, The correction ribbon does not raise high enough to erase any text. It raises just enough to catch the bottom part of lower case g, j, etc. Any help with this issue would be appreciated. Thanks...

Underneath the ribbon cassette base on the RHS there is access to a small "phillips head" screw. Remove the ribbon cassette, move the carriage to the LHS,POWER OFF. Loosen the screw, do not remove it or you will have a hard time getting it back in....once loosened, lift the cassette base up or down to the required position, tighten the screw. re-install tape and try machine...adjust as necessary.

You do'nt say what make. Turn the machine off. Check the daisy wheel is in correctly, check the ribbon cassette is in correctly, and check the lift off tape is not tangled in the daisy wheel.

Lift off tape

Does the tape lift up far enough for correction? If so check to be sure the dull side of the tape is facing the paper. Then be sure you are using a correctable ribbon, the feed wheel should be either yellow or orange. DickyO

Correction Tape

Two possibilities, one the correction tape is twisted and the wrong side is .facing the paper. The shinny side should be facing you, the dull side facing the paper. Second possibility you must make sure the ribbon is compatible with the correction tape. There are 2 types of ribbons. A correctable one (orange or yellow knob) and a multi strike (blue or purple knob on ribbon cartridge). The lift off correction tape (orange or yellow spools) only works with the correctable ribbon and the cover up correction tape (blue) works with the multistrike ribbon.

could be the ribbon is not lifting, do you see an image on the ribbon, also may be twisted inside the cartridge the shiny side has to be facing the keyboard.

Brother ML100 Lift-Off Correction Tape won't lift off

Correction tapes DO have a shelf life, Also make sure the ribbon is moving and very important and this may sound dumb, but I have seen it that the ribbon is not a correction ribon. Are the spool turns orange or yellow? should be. Blue is multistrike and will not correct. Don't know the shelf life of ribbons but they do loose the ability to correct.....Good luck try new supplies..

Correction Ribbon

If the machine is making allthe correction movements, be sure the correction tape is installed with the dull side facing the paper.
