Question about KitchenAid KGST307 Gas Kitchen Range

Replace burner spark ignitor?

Hello, One of the burner spark ignitor electrodes on our KGST307BWH KitchenAid slide-in range recently stopped working (no spark, so won't light). We've located the part online but aren't sure if this is something we should tackle ourselves. Does anyone know if replacing the ignitor requires removing the electronic panel and getting underneath the burner or if it can be replaced without taking the top of the stove apart? The photo of the part looks like it's something that just plugs into something under the burner but it comes with a retaining clip and we're not sure where that needs to go. Any help someone can give on how to do this will be much appreciated and will help us decide if this is something we should attempt or we should call in a professional.

Oops! Just realized that I didn't specify this is a gas range, not electric. Also, to lift up the top of the range (as you suggested) requires removing the electronic panel in the front. That's why I was hoping that it could be done from the top without going to that step. Thanks so much for your detailed response, AldoDraco. Any other thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

Electric igniters are usually very simple installs since they usually only come with a common and hot wire, and the igniter clips on to the burners right near the burner top for ignition. The easiest way a DIYer can do this themselves is to slowly take apart the current ignitor after lifting the top of the range up and taking note of every thing's placement. If you have the direct OEM part, then it either work or will not, based upon the fact that it's either the ignitor or the switch for it that has gone bad.

To test if your igniter has gone bad, remove it completely. (it should only be a small cylinder with two prongs, and two wires coming out the other side) Be sure not to strip any screws as heat from the oven will make them hard to remove. From there, you'll need to jump the connection on the top of the igniter with a conducting piece (ie: aluminum foil or wire), then test the common/hot wires with your circuit tester or volt meter. A solid tone or light means that your igniter is good, and the problem lies somewhere else.

Okay bdrothschild, after searching a bit I've found the user manual online for the oven and I can get a better idea of how it's set up. You can lift each of the burner caps and check each of the burner igniter tips for consistency as there are four of them. It now seems unlikely though that all four would go bad at the same time. You should also be able to disconnect the power and manually light the burners with a match, which I guess you're doing now to use the stove in the meantime. You can find the user manual online here @http://www.kitchenaid.com/assets/pdfs/li...

I'd suggest a super-cleaning and drying of all your burner caps and igniters as this seems to be a common problem for these gas ranges. I hope this helps, let me know what you decide.

Thanks so much, AldoDraco! I'll give the cleaning a try and will check out the online manual. The ignitor only stopped working on the front left burner and we're able to light manually so it's not a huge concern but would like to get them all working when possible. I appreciate your help and your follow-through.

Hello Barry;

My name is peter. I am a retired field service appliance technician.

Are you sure that it is the ignitor? It could be the ignitor spark module located behind the gas burner nob.

To determine which one is bad and save money, replace these components with good components on your range that are working.

Go into the following websites. In the sears website plug in you model number to get diagrams and part numbers. Search the internet for less expensive part cost.

Viking model VGR48 stovetop burners will not ignite?

First shut off the gas supply & disconnect electrical power to the range.
  • Remove all the burner control knobs, grates, burner caps & trim rings.
  • Remove the 2 screws securing the manifold panel, one from each corner. The panel will drop down.
  • Remove the screws from each manifold pipe mounting bracket. Remove 1/4 inch hex head bolt from the center of the manifold pipe. Push supply tube back to release from manifold pipe. Lift the cooktop assembly at the front to clear the 1/2 inch locator pins attached to the top of the bodyside.
  • Place cardboard between each side of cooktop & bodyside to prevent damage.
  • Move the cooktop to one side, being careful not to put stress on the wiring harness on left side.
  • Remove the wire from the electrode.
  • Remove the screw from the electrode mounting bracket to release the electrode.
You can replace the electrode & reassemble following instructions in reverse order.

Kgra 806 top oven burner only works on broil, not convect, I already replaced the spark electrode

I think there might also be a thermocouple involved that keeps the burner /gas valve open when hot .

Do I have a bad spark modulator or a bad electrode?

Yes, it does sound like you have a bad spark module. But it could be a dirty spark electrode, allowing most of the voltage follow the "dirty path" to ground instead of going through the air. Make sure the electrode (the insulator) part is clean and dry. If you still have a weak spark (or one that goes out when the gas is turned on), they you probably have a bad spark module. If you want to know for sure, try swapping 2 spark wires. Remember that when 1 ignitor sparks, they all (are supposed to) spark.

Range: Gas burner won't spark or ignite A surface burner igniter switch and a spark module activate the spark electrode when a burner is turned to the "Lite" position on a gas range's cooktop. If the surface burner switch, spark module or wiring in that circuit fails, the spark electrode won't work, and as a result the gas burner won't light. If those components work but the electrode won't spark, the problem could be that the spark electrode is coated with spilled food of is bent or broken. In addition, the electrode won't spark or ignite the burner properly if the ceramic insulation sleeve below the tip of the electrode is cracked or broken. If the gas burner isn't lighting, these repairs may help.

Hello,

Typically the burner come off by removing the burner caps and inside the burners are 2 screws that hold the burner base to the top..yes you could swap igniters on all burners they will be the same. If by swapping the igniters it still doesnt work the things that could be the problem are;

the spark module espically if the igniter that doesnt work on that burner suddendly work on a different burner

the spark switch on the gas valve for that burner..typically all burners spark when one it turned on but the only one that lights is one that has gas flow to it..so turning on a different burner first and leave it set to light setting by turning on the one that doesnt light it will light if that spark switch is the problem

of course a cracked igniter

a broken wire from the spark module to that igniter taht doesnt work..its not that uncommon that the insulation will sometimes wear off a wire off so the electric that should be going from the spark module to the igniter is instead being grounded by that wire touching the metal on the frame uninsulated

Good luck,i hope i have been able to help you fix your range,

The range or cooktop ignitor works in the same way as a car spark plug. High voltage is supplied to the center electrode and it arcs to ground. If the ground, burner cap, has grease or grit on it then it will inhibit the spark and cause the symptoms you are seeing. Pull the cap off, inspect the ignitors for any cracks. If no cracks, look to where the arc is going to - the exact location. Clean thoroughly with scotchbrite pad. If this doesn't fix the problem, you may have to call tech to replace ignitors. Cleaning fixes most of these problems. Hope this helps,

Ge profile gas range. one burner with no clicking and no ignition

You may have a bad burner switch. If you turn one of the other burner switches to make the spark modules spark look and see if the electrode is sparking at the bad burner. Most of the spark modules send a spark to all 4 burners when activated. If it sparks when another burner is activated open the valve and see if the burner will ignite. If so you probably have a bad burner switch.

Burner ignitor will not turn off after the burner lights Viking

replace the electrode that's the wire or pilot tip, it has a sensor built in, when it gets hot it stops automatically. if the electrode is between the front and rear burners, there are small holes on the burners going down on the side of the burner facing the ignition. they need to be clean. try a paper clip and insert the clip in side the holes.
