Chipset welding problem

Recently my tecra 9100 has a problem: it just dead frequently, the mouse, hard disk are all down. but cd-drive can be open and close. I had to power down and then it will restart. after several minutes, it will die again. I reinstalled the xp, nothing changed.

I found if i move the laptop, it dies almost at once. and i was told that probably there is a bad connection in my chipset. I want to know where I can get it fixed? can I do it myself?

I have opened the laptop several times, could you also tell me where is the chipset location?

Thanks a lot.

Kegtapper, thanks for reply. I think you are right. I opened the tecra last week but found there was nothing i can do. Fortunately, i found the problem is solved. So probably when i reinstall it, the grounding issue was removed.

    questions:

How did you determine it was the chipset?

Sounds like a grounding issue, screws not all the way in or grounding strap that connects one side to the other.

** my advice would be DO NOT touch the chipset, as it is a power/ground related issue **

Very few people can actually replace a chipset chip, it is put on by robots at the factory.

There is a known problem with the 9100 and the mainboard screws. The official Toshiba fix is to replace three of the screws with special "capture screws". A bulletin, with replacement part numbers, was at one time available for Toshiba service centers, but I cannot find it on the net right now. I'm not even sure you can still order the replacement screw kit.

The symptoms of the original factory screws are as you describe - lockups and mechanical sensitivity. The fix is the right screws, not a new mainboard.

Sounds like a bad optical drive. Good thing is: this thing uses a SelectBay removeable drive and it's a one touch remove type. Same as the ones used in the more popular Tecra 9000, Tecra 9100 series. I'd replace it. Best source is eBay. Price target? Under $15 delivered.

My Toshiba Tecra 9100 gives me an error message of PXE-E61: Media test failer, check cable. Then it says PXE-MOF: Exiting Intel PXE.ROM. It's asking for a system disk, but this was given to me and I don't...

The error message is caused by a failed hard disk. Replace that then borrow a Windows install disk from a friend and install with it and the key on the sticker.

No hard disk found

From what you describe, your 40GB should be compatible with Tecra 9100.
I'd suggest you reset the BIOS settings to the factory defaults, just to ensure there are no wierd settings. Have you managed to use any other HDD with your Tecra 9100 previously?

Have You checked for a BIOS update for this model / vintage ?

No sound

try to check the speakers or microphone lines and jacks whether they are connected properly . if still does not work, then check the audio settings under sound and devices in control panel.
If still makes no difference , then try reinstalling the audio drivers via the CD that was provided to you or u can find the drivers on http://www.toshiba.com or http://www.driverfiles.net/Notebooks/Toshiba/Tecra-9100/download/page,sh,31396,221,19,.html

The machine's hard drive has died. you will need to get a Canon technician out to replace it for you and to re-install the machine's system software. In addition to this you will also need to reconfigure some of the machines settings such as the address book, as this is usually lost when the hard drive is formatted or replaced.
