Question about Toshiba Tecra 9100 Notebook
Recently my tecra 9100 has a problem: it just dead frequently， the mouse, hard disk are all down. but cd-drive can be open and close. I had to power down and then it will restart. after several minutes, it will die again. I reinstalled the xp, nothing changed.
I found if i move the laptop, it dies almost at once. and i was told that probably there is a bad connection in my chipset. I want to know where I can get it fixed? can I do it myself?
I have opened the laptop several times, could you also tell me where is the chipset location?
Thanks a lot.
There is a known problem with the 9100 and the mainboard screws. The official Toshiba fix is to replace three of the screws with special "capture screws". A bulletin, with replacement part numbers, was at one time available for Toshiba service centers, but I cannot find it on the net right now. I'm not even sure you can still order the replacement screw kit.
The symptoms of the original factory screws are as you describe - lockups and mechanical sensitivity. The fix is the right screws, not a new mainboard.
