Question about Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

CDR870 cd recorder. Won't accept any rewritable (audio) discs. Message 'OPCfail' appears with all brands. (' OPC has failed; disc is corrupted or player is defective') I have tried. (All new discs TDK, Verbatim & JVC). Works ok with CD-R (audio). Tony Charlton tonycharlton7@talktalk.net

The No OPC message means that the unit can't record. The laser power calibration for the burner failed the internal test with that disc. Was the disc a blank disc? Make sure that you use a clean CD-R or unfinalized CD-RW. Try a different lot or brand of CD-Rs or CD-RWs. If the problem persists, then the laser on the recorder is damaged. If the unit is under warranty, contact Philips. However, based on the date given on the manual, this may not be worth finding a shop to fix the unit. DVD/CD burners for computers are fairly cheap but I'm not sure of the specs for a replacement CD burner for inside this unit.

The manual is available from Philips here: www.p4c.philips.com/files/c/cdr765bk/cdr765bk_dfu_eng.pdf . The trouble-shooting information is on page 21 (page 23 of the PDF).
I hope this helps.

There are a lot of forums which discuss OPC failure and it strikes every hardware maker and brand of media.

The bottom line is that certain media and certain writers just don't get along.

The manual:

"I don't buy expensive blanks. I buy modest quality blanks and watch
for sales so that I can them for about a dime a piece after the rebate
check comes in. If I have an OPC Fail message, I try another blank. If
I find that they consistently fail (about half a buck wasted) I move
the stack over to the computer (which seems to work fine with these)
and buy another stack of blanks of a different brand next time I see a
good price..."

an interesting workaround:

"CDRW 5000 work around for OPC FAIL
Here's a work around for OPC FAIL on cdrw 5000 -

method 1: turn unit on at least 30 minutes or more before use (this seems to work best for me)

method 2: run OPC on an old cd that always works - after OPC passes, remove old cd and insert new CD (you only get 99 OPC runs per disc)

-or use a combination of the two methods

I've always used TDK and I recently bought a new batch and they stopped working. The old ones still work everytime. I don't know enough about the system to guess what the difference is.

side note: CDRW 2000 will finalise discs from the cdrw 5000 but not the other way around.

Hope that helps "

After i have finish recording and i am finalizing the the cd code OPC appears on the screen, and being finalize the cannot play in other cd player why?

OPC means the unit had trouble Optical Processing Calibration, which means the disc surface may be damaged. Using brand name media and being careful to not touch the recording surface would help.

It's not completing the finalization so it won't play in a CD player yet.

It's mostly in the manual

http://www.retrevo.com/support/Harman-Kardon-CDR-20-CD-Players-manual/id/386dj191/t/2/

OPC: Stands for Optical Processing Calibration.

When you see this message in the Information

Display for the Record DeckK, it means

that the laser transport inside the unit is making

the calibrations and adjustments needed so that

the recording process is optimized for the specific
disc in use.

When an unfinalized CD-R or CD-RW disc is

placed in the Record Deck%, the letters

OPCwill flash once the Table of Contents has

been read. This indicates that the unit is optimizing

its circuits for maximum compatibility with

the specific recordable disc in use. the number

and total running time of any tracks that have

already been recorded will appear in the

Information DisplayK, and the appropriate

indicator SPwill light to tell you if a CD-R or
CD-RW disc is in use.

To Finalize a disc, place it in the Record

Drawer%. Once the disc's Table of Contents

information has been read and the OPC process

has been completed, press the Finalize button

E@and note that the Finalize Indicator

Uwill begin to flash. Within three seconds,

press the Select button9*and note that

the Finalize IndicatorUwill stop flashing.

The Finalization process will take up to two

minutes, depending on the length of material

recorded on the disc. During the Finalization

process the Record Deck will not accept any
operating commands.

Have not been able to find digital cd's. Are cd audios the same for use on philips 870

Philips CDR 870 is designed to RECORD with ONLY Audio or Music CD-R or CD-RW discs !!
The word(s) Audio Or Music MUST be written somewhere on the Cd disc or Cd Covers.
Computer CD-R and CD-RW discs will NOT Record on this recorder !!
My experience of GOOD Audio/Music discs : Philips,Sony,Traxdata,Verbatum
My experience of BAD Audio/Music discs : ALL unbranded discs, Maxell,TDK

Hi.I have CD Recorder Marantz DR6000.After reading and initalizing blank CD-R Audio next on display show OPC ERROR.It,s reading all audio CD,s,oryginal, and CD-R.When I wanna finalized old CD-R,recorded by...

DR-6000 only accepts CD-R audio or CD-R music discs, not the standard CD-R discs. the difference is that the audio and music discs have the OPC formatted differently and they cost a bit more because they include the royalties fee. Standard CD-R discs won't work in this recorder. The correct discs have compact disc "digital audio" logo on them.

Have just purchased a secondhand Philips 570 cd recorder and purchased TDK blanks for my first recording test. While the disc was still in the machine it recorded and played back ok.However, after removing...

Are you sure the TDK blank had either AUDIO/MUSIC somewhere written on the disc...if not, then that is the problem. On the other hand it it should not have recorded or played back as you said it did.
If it did have Audio/Music written on the disc, then first of all give the laser a clean by using either a disc cleaner or better still, take the cover off and gain access to the laser, using a cotton bud, diped in INDUSTRIAL METHALATED SPIRIT (usually coloured purple) do not use medical metholated spirit as oily additives could be added and smear the laser lens. Dry off the lens with the dry end of the cotton bud. Do not soak the cotton bud in the spirit, just a very small amount will do !!!
If it does not work now, try using other good named branded Audio/Music CD-R discs as there appears to be such a variation in the quality of CD discs which is well documented !
Did you FINALISE the TDK disc before you removed it from you recorder??
I have a feeling its the TDK disk.....I avoid TDK if I can...Try Sony or Philips Audio/Music discs, very few failures for me with those brands.
Hope this has ben of some help...good luck

THIS IS AN OLD UNIT. SUDDENLY THOUGH IT HAS STOPPED RECORDING.THE MANUAL HAS A NOTE IN IT ABOUT THE OPC LIMIT.1st QUESTION IS WHICH SIDE OF THE RECORDER IS IT TALKING ABOUT BECAUSE IT HAS RECORDED OVER...

Are you actually getting a message regarding OPC?

I'm not sure we can determine which CD drive is exhibiting the problem from what is given, if that's what your Question #1 is about.

Answer #2: If the problem appears at initial calibration of the new disc, try a different (or cleaner) disc. BTW: did you start using a different brand or type of disc in the middle of this?

These links lead to some technical info about what OPC is.

http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq05.html#S5-11

http://www.osta.org/specs/pdf/opc.pdf

Running Optimum Power Control (Running OPC)
A technique used by recorders for monitoring and maintaining the accuracy of all the
mark and land lengths across a CD-R disc.

-----
The CD Recorder does some sample write testing at the beginning of a disc to get a bead on how much laser power it needs to use to make reliable 'ones and nones" on the media. It records the settings in memory. Throughout the recording it monitors surface relectivity and compares it against the test data and in many cases can compensate on the fly for changes.

My read on this is that it may be trying to tell you on any given recording that it has reached or surpassed its effectiveness limit.

Won't record record to CD-RW

First make sure your cdrw disc is blank. If it is blank try another good known cdrw brand disc and burn it in 12x speed for a good burn.

If it still fail check the software side of your cd rewriter first and lastly the cd rewriter unit.
