SOURCE: convert my external drive as my back up disk

Hi, keep it simple mate, just change where the back up is stored when your back up program asks you where to store it, just tell it to store to your external drive

SOURCE: MAXTOR HARD DRIVE

Go to "My Computer".
Right click your drive and select properties.
click the "security" tab.
select one by one and click "remove" for each user.
When all users have been deleted, click on add.
Under the "Enter the object names to select", type "everyone"; click OK.
now, under "Permissions for Everyone", click the check box for "Full Control" for "Allow". Now all the boxes for Allow should be checked.
click OK.
Now you should have access to the drive.

Several things could be happening.
1. the hard drive direct drive motor is giving out.
2. the hard drive is full.
3. the hard drive needs to be optimized ( that is defragmented) using the Windows defragment utility. If the drive is large it will take some time to complete.

I need to restore by backup files, Is there a certain process to follow in doing that or is it just drag and drop the files back to my C drive?

It depends on how you backed the files up. If you just drag and dropped them when you backed them up, then you can just drag and drop them back. But if you used a specific program to back them up, then you have to use the same program to restore them.

Don't know how to upload data to new computer

Browse to the location on the new computer where you want to save the old data.
Right click and choose New Folder.
Name the folder Files from Old PC
Press enter twice and the new folder will open.
Plug the Maxtor USB into the new computer and turn on the power.
The drive will install and be given a drive letter in my computer.
Browse to the drive in My Computer and double click the Maxtor drive.
Browse to the folder where you saved the old data and open it.
Now do the keyboard command CTRL + A (select all) this will select all the files.
Click one of the selected files & drag them all to the new folder you have open and let go.
All of the files from the Maxtor will copy to your new computer.

My C-Drive is full so how can I shift stuff to my D-Drive? Thanks

I would assume that the D Drive is a secondary Hard Drive for Storage. If that be the case. Here are 2 ways to move your Data .

1. Go into my Computer and double click on the C drive. Once this is showing all your files. Leave this open and Go into My Computer again and this time open up the D Drive. Now you should have 2 windows open. If you wish you can resize the windows so they are next to each other and you can work with them. Here we can Drag n Drop the folders or files from the C Drive to the D Drive. To Do This you can left click on a file or folder on the c drive and once you click it hold the mouse button down when you click and then just drag it over to the D Drive Window. And let go. This will move the folder or file from one drive to the other. You can also select multiple files or folders by holding down the control key when you click. You select one then the next one and so on, they will remain highlighted showing you they are selected, then you can drag them all over to the D drive Window.

2. Another way is to select the folder or file you want to copy, And right click on it. A pop up menu will appear. Scroll down to copy and left click.... Now you can go to the D Drive window and right click in there and select paste. This will copy the folder or files into that Drive.

Hope this is clear to understand...

I have recently purchased a new p.c. i didnt want to lose my files from my old p.c so i bought a maxtor 500gb external hard drive to back up my files and put them onto my new p.c, i am a novice and not...

It's important to lose your files from time to time, but you can also use a migration tool to help you, or just pull the drive from the old machine to keep spare in the new machine (and put a fresh drive in the old machine unless you are going to recycle it.)  Imaging the old drive won't work if you have much encryption going on.

It's simple to observe: Know what you're doing!  Read books on PC operating systems (e.g. bsd and windows) and keep very good track of what you want to preserve and what you could be doing better.
