Question about Nikon Coolpix 2100 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Physically broken power switch

The power switch "ring" around the shutter button is physically broken. I was using it outdoors, ice fishing = cold. It has popped off, allowing the shutter button to hang (like a dislodged eyeball!) from its tiny power cord. The camera will still turn on and off and take pictures, download, etc. so long as you hold the switch/button together while you use it. Everything is so small that its hard to tell, but it looks like a tiny plastic ear or pin (or two or three) snapped off under the ring, where it attaches to whatever it drives beneath it.

Main Questions; Can a guy who works on cars for a living and ties flies get the parts and fix it himself? If not, any idea if its worth paying for a repair? I dont really want to open this rig up until I have some idea if its do-able...

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The spares are not available and a repair is uneconomical as you can buy a perfect example with all accessories for an average of around £15 (US$24.50, Euro 17.50) on EBay. The 3MP 3100 goes for an average of around £20 (US$32.66, Euro 23.35).

Or get them for free on Yahoo FreeCycle. Often free ones have a broken battery chamber latch, but a small file, a carefully bent paperclip and epoxy resin glue soon make a neat replacement for the flimsy plastic tag.

It's on the ring around the "Func/Set" button. Press the bottom of the ring to cycle between single shot and timer settings. When you have selected a timer shot, press the shutter button to start the timer.

When useing under water the shutter was so slow, when frameing a shot of a fish. By the time the shutter operated the fish was gone. can we lock the focus so it takes the picture quicker.

By pressing the shutter button half-way until the camera "beeps", you lock in the focus. However, underwater in a waterproof housing, I'm not sure you can hear the beep.

Camera works but the screen went black A640 except for video and color swap. Did I press a button? I was shooting in cold weather.

Think that you might have accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the LCD display on and off to save batteries. You would then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn the screen back on, just press the DISP button one more time.

But if you've already tried this, have you also tried downloading any of your photos taken with the black screen to your computer? Are the photos also black? If so, you might instead be experieincing a stuck shutter (possibly due to the cold weather).

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).

To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

First, i suggest you try this. Remove batteries then press and hold power button for 15 seconds. Wait a further 1 minute then reinsert batteries and try again.
If no good, try this. If you can get to the MENU mode (in stored pics), scroll right to SETUP, press centre button to OK it. Scroll down to SETUP1. Scroll right, then down to initialize which will be lit yellow. Then scroll right and scroll up when ok will be lit yellow then press centre button to OK it. I need advice on how to take Ice-hockey action pics...

Pictures get blurred because of several reasons:

Low shutter speed - occurs in low lightning conditions.
Auto focus not focused - occurs when pressing the shutter button all the way without waiting for the auto focus ready signal (green box)

To speed up the shutter do the following:
In Camera menu-Quality- Set ISO 100 for outdoor, ISO 400 indoor.

To avert focus problems, set camera menu-Rec- Focus-Infinity, Rec-Quick shutter-On

Hope that helps.

Broken power switch/ring

yes, it probably won't work, buy a broken camera off ebay for $5 and replace the whole button, it's very easy, also coolpix 2100 will be cheaper and it uses the same part
