Question about Compaq Presario SR1103WM-B (PC183B#ABA) PC Desktop

No more I turned my computer off it will not power on. checked power cord and power outlet--is there a battery or something to replace?

    pc has no power; checked cords and outlets. Heard it could be dead battery on motherboard. If so is this hard to replace?

Hi,
Im assuming this is a desktop computer.
I ask this, because sometimes people post in the wrong categorys.
If your getting no power, Then the first steps, are as you,ve already done, checked the plugs main fuse. Should be rated 3-5 Amp.
The next suspect item, would be your computers PSU ( power supply Unit ) This can only really be checked with a multi-meter, if you take the side/top panel off. ( whichever Applies ) Towercase Or desktop.
You have an internal Power supply unit. This provides power to Motherboard, and internal hardware Devices. Hard-Drive CD Rom And any other internal devices. You,ll see a Square Box to the rear of The Computer, with several cables coming out from it. The Majority will Have 1 Red @ 5volt 2 Blacks Earth or ground And 1 yellow Cable @ 12 volts.
There may be an internal quick blow fuse in the PSU Itself.
To attempt to remedy your issue, i,d suggest to remove ( unpowered switched Off ) the 4 Pin Connector To the Hard-drive And the CD/DVD rom. These 4 pin Plastic Plugs are refered to As molex Connectors. simply pull the plugs, towards the rear of the Computer. HD/DVD Drives Only. Then try to power On Computer. this will eliminate, a possible hard-drive failure or seizure, and also allow the PSU extra power for booting up the Computer.
Other probabilitys are broken or faulty, power/On case switch, but quite rare.
If you follow these steps, and get some form of life from the Computer. Please let me know, and i will guide you further.

could be a lot of factors that would cause it to not power on. try to isolate them one at a time starting from the very obvious. often we may overlook something just because it seems too easy and obvious. i would suggest checking the power cord making sure it is securely attach to the power supply of your computer and to a verified working power outlet. if by any chance you are using a surge protector or UPS, try to disconnect them temporarily and directly plug the power cord to a working wall outlet. if you have an extra power cord, try testing it. a faulty cord will cut the power flow from the outlet to your unit. next, remove all attached devices including mouse and keyboard to the tower/unit to make sure none of the external devices is causing a possible short to the system. another thing to try as you said is to test your power supply. unplug the computer from the wall outlet, press the power button for about 10 to 15 seconds just to drain any residual power. Then disconnect all cables/connectors of the power supply from the mainboard/motherboard and other internal devices you have. This is to isolate it from the rest of the computer. You can then use your short the pin 15/16 from the 20/24 pin connector using a paper clip or a piece of wire to allow you to see if the power supply fan will spin which will tell if it is at least working or generating power. from there, you can use a multi-meter to test it. Instead of laying down all the steps, it may help checking some guides online on how to perform a tester. you may check this one as it has some images that may help you go through the process. http://tinyurl.com/nrcgqbv
if you have isolated that your power supply is faulty, you will need to get a replacement. if you have confirmed it works, next thing to try is to minimize the internal devices on the computer and reset the cmos jumper. check the manual for your computer for the reset jumper settings/pins. be sure to remove the cmos battery then set the jumper settings, and plug the 12 volts or 20/24 pin connector from the power supply back to the motherboard. plug the power supply to an outlet and see if the motherboard will have any light, will generate any beep or if the fans will spin. if so, allow it for a few seconds, then turn off the power supply switch or unplug it if it has no switch. adjust the reset jumper back, put the cmos battery back then try to switch the power supply again. if it fails to power on, most likely a replacement motherboard is needed. on the other hand, if it powers up, then try to connect internal devices back to the motherboard and power supply testing the power each time to see if any of the components is actually shorting out the unit until you identify what may need to be replaced. if you get lucky, resetting the cmos jumper alone may fix the system without the need to replace anything. hope this helps. good day

Here's some tricks I would try. Something here, might help...
1. Verify the monitor's power cord is plugged firmly into the wall outlet and the back of the monitor.
2. Verify the monitor cable is firmly connected to the computer and the monitor.
3. Verify that you have turned the monitor power switch on.
4. If the power light on the monitor is not on, test the wall outlet (plug in a light or something you know works).
5. If the power light on the monitor is not on, try a different power cord.
6. If the power light is on and yellow or orange or flashing, but nothing displays, or the display is incorrect, borrow a monitor from a friend. If that works, your monitor probably needs replaced.
7. Also, you could try your monitor on a friend's computer. If it doesn't work, your monitor probably needs replaced. If it works properly on your friends computer, the problem may be with your computers video output port, motherboard video chip (or video card, if you have one), or drivers.

Inspiron 2305 power cord doesn't turn the desktop on


After connecting the AC adapter to a wall outlet and to the computer press the power button the right side of the inspiron. The button itself should then lite up white if the power adapter is good. If not, check the power outlet you are using. Plug in something else and see if it works on this wall outlet. Some outlets are connected to a wall switch. If its still a nogo you may need to replace the AC adapter.

Computer will turn on but wont stay on


Most likely your power supply is faulty. You can test it with a voltmeter to determine if this is the cause or if it's the motherboard.

Perform the following steps, in order, until power is restored or it is determined that there is a hardware failure:

1.Disconnect everything from the computer, including the power cord.
2.With the power cord disconnected , press the power button on the front of the computer for five seconds. Plug in the power cord and test to see if the computer can turn on. If not, continue using these steps.
NOTE: If the power supply fan makes an inconsistent grinding sound or stops and starts erratically, replace the power supply

3. With the power cord removed, flip the red voltage selector switch to the opposite position. Wait about five seconds, and then switch the red voltage selector switch back to its original location. Ensure that the voltage selector switch is on the correct setting, 115V for North America.
Performing this step ensures that the voltage switch is engaged and set correctly for your country/region.

4. Plug in the power cord and test to see if the computer can turn on. If not, continue using these steps.
5. Plug a lamp into the same outlet to see if the wall outlet has power. Try the computer in a different outlet in order to eliminate the outlet as a possible source of the issue. Test both to see if the wall outlets have power.
6. Remove all extension cords, power strips, surge protectors and any converters that remove ground. Plug the power cable directly to the wall outlet. Test for power. If this fixes the issue, find the device that is causing the issue and do not use it.
NOTE: If you find the device that was causing the problem was a surge protector, resetting a breaker or fuse on the surge protector may fix the issue.
8. Remove all attached devices except for keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
9. Remove any internal component that was recently added, such as video card, memory, CD, DVD, and hard drives. An added device may take more power than the power supply is rated for. If the problem goes away when the component is removed, the only option is to upgrade the power supply to power supply with a higher wattage rating.
10. Check the power switch:
a. With the power cord disconnected, press the power button on the front of the PC. The button should release easily and not stick in the socket.
  • If the button sticks, it should be replaced or serviced.
  • If the power button does not stick and appears to be functioning, continue using these steps.
11. With the power cord disconnected, remove the case or side panel.
  • Follow the wires from the power button on the front of the computer to their connection on the motherboard.
  • Look at the power switch cables connected to the motherboard. If the cable has become disconnected, connect the power switch cable connector to the connector on the motherboard.
  • Replace the side panel, plug in the power cord and test to see if the computer can turn on. If not, continue using these steps.
12. Find the defective part:
  • With the power cord disconnected, remove the case or side panel.
  • Disconnect all power cable connectors from their connectors on the motherboard and from the back of internal devices (the back of drives). Make sure to label or remember where each cable connects for future reference.
  • Replace the side panel, plug in the power cord, and examine the light on the back of the power supply:

If the LED is on solid and is not flashing, the power supply is probably good and the problem is most likely caused by a defective component (processor, memory, PCI card) or a defective motherboard. Have the computer serviced, or remove the components and replace them, one at a time, to find and replace the defective component.

14. If the LED is still flashing (it should not flash with all connectors removed), plug the power cable into a different power outlet that is known to be good. If the LED still flashes, the power supply should be replaced.

15. If the LED light is now off, plug the power cable into a different power outlet that is known to be good. If the LED stays off, the power supply should be replaced.

NOTE: If an electrical storm or power surge has recently occurred, then it is more likely that the power supply, the modem, or motherboard is damaged and requires replacement.

Have power cord plugged into asus eee machine and wall outlet. light has been blinking all day. when asus eee gets unplugged it shuts off.


lets try this ---

* turn of your computer
* remove the plug from your computer.
* Remove the battery from your computer
* Let it sit for 3-5 minutes
* Replace the battery
* Plug your computer back in (Make sure the wall outlet is working as well, seems simple, but have seen it before)
* Let it sit for about 3-5 minutes
* Boot your computer
* go to
Start -> Control Panel -> Power Options -> Power Meter
Note the Total Battery Power Remaining

* Let your computer sit for 15-30 Minutes and see if the Total Battery Power Remaining has gone up.

If so problem solved

if not you may be time for a new battery.

How old is your computer? Did you recently have a power outage or anything? Most the time if a computer won't turn on, something in it went bad OR an outlet is bad. Try this:

1. Make sure that the power switch is on, the switch in the back (on the power supply itself) is turned on, and everything along those lines is functioning.
2. If that doesn't work, and it will not power on AT ALL, make sure the cords are plugged firmly in place, including the surge protector and/or the power cord itself.
3. Try resetting the surge suppressor and/or plug the computer into a different outlet in the surge suppressor. Try other items in that surge suppressor (or even in the wall outlet, if that's what you're plugged into) to make sure that the outlet itself is working.
4. If your computer is plugged directly into a working wall or surge suppressor outlet, try a different power cord.
5. If your surge suppressor works, your wall outlet has power to it, and you are using a known-good power cord in the computer, you will have to go into more in-depth investigation as something inside the computer likely went bad. It could be the video card, motherboard, CPU fan, power button, or the power supply itself. Start by testing the video card and the power supply by (one at a time) swapping out a known-good component for the one you suspect may be bad. If it won't turn on after that, try swapping out the next and try it again. If it still will not work, it could be something more serious such as the motherboard or power button.
