If this happens just roll back your drivers and then "Google" to see if their are any other folks reporting this issue. When you say that not able to download the flash player using IE and if it got crashed then i'd say please try to add the IE in DEP list.
To do :
Right click on My computer and click on properties.
Go to advanced and click on first settings button.
I've attached the screen shot.
Click on Data Execution Prevention and Choose turn ON option.
add the IE in that list.
Now try downloading flash it should fix the issue.

i would suggest that the ram in your computer has possibly broken down over a period, may i recommend obtaining some new ram, if you go to www.crucial.com they can provide you with information that tells you which ram you have in your PC.
