Question about GE GSH25JFR Side by Side Refrigerator

Open Question

GE refrigerator not cooling

Noticed drink from frig noticeably not as cold as normal 5 pm 02/27/08. Moved thermostat for frig from 5 to 9 and left all night. Frig no cooler this morning, 02/28/08, 7 am. Removed cover in upper left rear of frig to expose small door between freezer and frig. Unplugged the connector for the door control motor and when I reconnected it the motor ran and opened the door. I moved the frig out from the wall and removed the bottom rear panel so I could vacuum all the crud from the plugged filters. I washed the compressor housing off also. Nothing seems to help as the frig doesn't seem to be cooling down very fast. It has only dropped 5 degrees, from 60 to 55 degrees in 5 hours. It seems to me a small fan should have been used to move cold air from the freezer to the refrigerator instead of relying on convection currents. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

SOURCE: Frig not getting cold

See if the coils are blocked with ice. Fridge gets cold air from freezer, ice would prevent this thus a warm fridge.

SOURCE: burnt plastic smell coming from bottom of frig

This is a sign of a short and should be looked at immediately. A smell like that is a sign of something burning. I could be the start relay and start capacitor with overload. But I would not sleep with the possibility of a fire. I will look over your model and see if I can find what this could be, Sea Breeze

SOURCE: my frig is running but not cooling - frig is 50

I can help you diagnose the problems with your GE. Several things can cause these symptoms. All you need is a voltage meter patience and a want to, to repair and do it better than a paid technician. In most cases with the PSS26MSRSS the defrost heater is the cause for this. Look into rear of your freezer and back wall. Is Ice or frost building on rear wall? If yes unplug and prepair to remove contents in freezer compartment. Remove rear panel in freezer and use hair dryer to defrost ice until the defrost heater is visible. BRB , Sea Breeze

I own a Fogel Fridge Model # VR-17-RE-PR Recently

Richard,
It is important to know if the compressor itself is running. If there is a loose connection to the compressor via the start/over load relay (normally attaches directly onto the compressor), or if the start/over load otself is bad the compressor will not run. Best way to tell is via gauges but I doubt your frig has ports. Check to see if your compressor is really hot. Could be bad start/over load relay or bad compressor. Try unplugging your frig for say 30 min then, with your hand on top of a cool compressor, plug the frig back in and see if compressor smoothly vibrates for at least 5 min without becoming very hot or shutting off even though fan continues to run. The fact your fan is running TYPICALLY means the thermostat is calling for lower temps and the fan/compressor kick in together.

Freezer and frig not as cold

It sounds like the heater that automatically defrosts the unit may have failed. Before calling service I recommend checking the following: all door seals, make sure they are closed and sealing properly, also the condenser coil either on the back or bottom of the machine should be vacuumed out regularly to get rid of dust buildup. If that's all good it may be the defrost heater and if you're handy you can look up on youtube how to replace it or call a professional.

You need to replace the "defrost thermostat". Here is a link to the part you need.

Here is a video to show you how to replace the part. The model shown may be different but the process is the same.

Refrigerator starts cooling mainly when I open the door

Put a thermometer in both the freezer and the fridge. Fridge should be around 40F if not a little lower, but should stay above 30F.

Freezer should be just below 30.

I have a Jenn-Air side by side frig. The freezer side cools too cold, the frig side not enough. 2 weeks ago I took all the food out of freezer and noticed ice build up on back. I unplugged unit, let it...

If the freezer is staying cold it sounds like a defrost system problem. A bad timer, heater or thermostat can cause frost to build up on the coils and block air flow to the refrig side. Check out ACMEHowTo.com for troubleshooting the defroster problem.
There is a small duct between the freezer and refrigerator side if this is blocked the frig side won't cool.

Freezer to cold refrigerator not cold enough

sounds like your defrost timer is not working properly . Most fridge/freezers the fridge gets cooled from the cool air from the freezer . But when the defrost timer is not working properly the section between the fridge and freezer freezes up and hence doesnt allow the flow of cool air into the fridge. The defrost timer can be easily replaced.

no danger of fire, they(Whirlpool) run a copper heat tube through the center mullion of frig, to cut down on amount of undesirable condensation that may build up between doors, reason for extra heat can be from leaving door open too long, perhaps the coils under the frig need to be vacuumed,

Kenmore refrigerator 5260 not cold

  • the defrost timer on your machine is actually integrated within a control board/air diffuser. hopefully that is not the problem (expensive).
  • i would start by testing the heater and bimetal thermostat in the freezer. (note: the bimetal thermostat will only have continuity when below 40 degrees.)
  • the heat you feel between the doors is normal (if it is not too hot).
  • some of the heat that is released by the machine is intentionally released between the doors to prevent condensation.
  •  if it seems warmer than usual then you might need to clean the coils under the machine and make sure the airflow under the machine is not obstructed at all.
  • if the coils are dirty then they will not be able to release the heat properly and the heat will be released in other areas like between the doors.

Sound like a bad thermostat, otherwise it is a sick puppy. I clean mine with compressed air, or a shop vacuum on 'blow'
