Broken transmission in washer - can I replace just the washer unit? Or does the whole thing need to be replaced.

The transmission can be replaced by it's self, but it's sort of expensive. See this diagram part 3
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5158202&diagram_id=1275495#d1275495
It will be even more unless you can do it yourself.
I don't know if you can replace just the washer.

Replace wiper motor

Wiper Motor
  1. Remove the wiper blade and arm assemblies, as outlined earlier in this section.
  2. Turn the ignition ON and the wiper switch OFF so the wiper motor returns to the park position.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4. Unfasten any necessary retainers and remove the air inlet screen assembly. Disconnect the washer hoses.

On some vehicles, it may be necessary to remove the nut from the ball crank and remove the crank arm.

I think a overloaded the washer and it wouldnt spin.

Frigidaire washer will not take a overloaded tub without causing belt problems.
Unplug the washer.
Remove the 2 screws on the very bottom of the front washer panel.
Slide the front panel down slightly and remove it from the cabinet.
Inspect the belt around the motor pulley and transmission.
If it is worn at all it needs replacing.
You could plug the washer back in and set it to Spin cycle and watch for the motor to turn and the belt slipping to verify a bad belt.
Keep your hands, fingers and tools away from all moving parts.

Frigidaire dryer rear spindle

Hi,
This Should Be Lubricated, Providing The right Lube Is Used.
You need To grease The Bearings With A high Melting point Grease. Copperease Or Similar. ( I,m not sure What the Americans Use ) alternatively A little Vaseline ( Petroleum Jelly Should Do the Trick ) Always Works Wonders For Me :)
If The Bearing Race ( Holder ) Has Broken, Then A replacement Will be Necessary, This will involve A gear Puller Or similar to remove.
If the bearing is Grating Or grinding, lubricant is only a short term fix.
