Question about Sirius Sportster 4 SP4-TK1 Satellite Radio Receiver with Car Kit

4 Answers

Sportster randomly turns off.

I have my sportster on a boombox base, the base is receiving power and the sportster will come on whenever I hit the power button. But suddenly it has begun to shut down randomly. Once it said "Battery Low" but I assume it's supposed to be drawing power from the base?

This is my second sportster in a year and a half. These things don't seem to be made to last.

I have the same problem "Low battery / powering down" on the boom box with a sportster 5. I bought 2 complete boom box and radio both have the same problem. I checked the power cord 122 ac volts going into the charger and 12 dc volts at the boom box end. I don't have a amp meter. Works fine in the car kit. Has nothing to do with heat.

I had the same problem When I looked at the settings for display the brightness was set to the highest level in manual mode. I set the unit to automatic the screen dimmed and I have not had any issues since.

Your answer is border line retarded at best. The problem is your sportster overheating not your boom box. Someone said you can dim the lcd on the sportster and that could help. No wonder these PAS radios carry a 30 day warranty. I have the same thing happening. Mine happen like clock work. I put it on and it completely shuts down after 10 minutes. Does not do it with any of the other 3 sportsters on my account.

I too started experiencing drop-out/unit lock-ups after two months.  After resetting to factory defaults, per Sirius phone support, without results, only pulling out power adapter would reset the unit.  I suspected a design problem with heat.  I wrapped the unit with a medical cold pack and got stable operation.  Given all the complaints I see on this web site, I suspect Sirius is well aware of the issue, and not addressing it appropriately.

Remove the batteries from the boombox. If there is no batteries in the boombox, and it still does this, then the boombox itself is no longer any good.

Sportster 5 turns on and off randomly every few seconds hooked to a dock.

Sportster units get very hot ! If you use it in the boombox stop ! Take the radio unit out - remove the silver cover from the boombox ( don't overlook the 2 hidden screws under the speaker grills ) take a dremel tool with a cutting wheel - and cut all the shrouding away around the top of the reciever. This will allow the radio to run way cooler ! I also drilled several holes thru the swivel mount to allow better air-flow !

Get a new dock if you think its the dock. If that doesn't fix it, then your dock connector has a broken solder joint from years of wear and tear. It's common, and a very easy repair. Just resolder the connector to the board.

My sirius radio sportster works sometimes and others doesn't

Buy radio shack electronic contact cleaner (in a can) and spray a small amount on the male connector from the antenna wire, and spray a small amount on the male connector in the base of the Sportster that the sportster interfaces with. Place the antenna connector onto the base unit and remove it several times and swirl it while connected. Place the sportster into and remove it from the base several times. This usually will fix the issue. Sat signals are extremely sensitive to the slightest oxidation or dirt or whaterver on that tiny antenna connection point.

when you listen to a cd or the normal radio does the drivers side speaker work? if it does then it is most likely the base is the problem. you might have a loose connection in your car. or the speaker is blow.

Sirius Sportster SP-B1 Boombox

Your best best is to replace the units. Sirius usually does it for free for existing customers. You can a good discount on a new boombox as well. The new models are designed to work with more Sirus receivers on the market.

Sportster does not work

The issue will have to be the sportster unit. It would be too much of a coincidence for bothe the car cradle and Boom-Box to have something wrong with them. I have seen this before...most of the time, the connections on the sportster will have a bad solder joint. This will cause it to turn on and off intermittently. You can confirm this by wiggling the unit when it is docked and getting it to turn on and off. This is not something that would be easy to repair as you will want an electronics repair to fix. The Sportster comes with a 1 year warranty from the manufacturer, so if it is covered, then you can get a new tuner and apply your old subscription to the new one.

Power but no signal

I work for sirius so I know about all of these different issues and the most common one is the connections. It is imperative that the radios be connected to power with the cig lighter adapter. This adapter had circuitry in it that lowers the cars 12 volts to 5 volts which the sirius unit ooerates on. The old units were 12 volt and could hard wired into the vehicles fuse block, but all of the new radios operate on 5 volts. If this is not the issue with either of you then you have defective units. Being that all warranty replacement are with remanufactured units, your chance of getting a problematic unit increases after the initial return of your new unit.

Sirius sportster sp-tk1, always displays "acquiring signal"

Sirius does not stand behind their products, There is no out of warranty repair for their radios,  and they do not offer sites for repair. Seems  like this is a definite problem with this model. Their solution is to buy a new radio,(with all the new-docking,boombox etc) accessories. also they charge $75.00 to change to the new radio.I liked my sportster 1 because of the FM modulator. It just had to be centrally located and all the radios in my home picked it up(no docking) the new radios require $50.00 docking stations for each stereo location and radio location, unless you bring a boombox everywhere, and the sound isn't the same.    I feel there should be a class action lawsuit against Sirius for these reasons and I might look into it. What do all you think?
