I have the sony str de485. When i turn it on the display doesnt turn on only some buttons light up so there is power. There is no sound coming from speakers only very faintly through sub woofer. Whats goin on it was working fine before?

Internal dead short in pwer supply. needs service. Sorry for the bad news

if u are using bose speaker system then remember one thing. go to speaker setup and select all the speakers as large not small. then only u will get a good tone. bose speakers will handle the output power of ur amplifier.
u can only adjust the bass and treble of ur frond Channel speakers. for that
select multi channel surround sound and the increase and decrease the bass and treble
ok

run through the settings and see if by mistake you turn the output to the sub off

replaced power output.....

please make sure that the connections are firm. Then check if the input mode is set to auto in. Also try to change the sound field on the receiver and try. If the issue perform reset by turning OFF the receiver and press n hold the MODE button along with the power button till S.F clear appears on the receiver and try. You can also try to disconnect and reconnect the power cord from wall outlet for 2 minutes and try.

This generally means you've got a short somewhere, and the received is trying to protect itself.

My suggestion is to disconnect all of your speakers at both ends, and reconnect them.

Most times this happens because a speaker wire is lose, and the positive and negative connections are touching each other, causing it to short out.

It could only need some soldering of the display itself. If you want to try it your self.
remove the top cover (you may need to remove the front panel also)

1. inspect the twenty or so pins of the fl display tube especially the end ones (resolder if bad).
2. if they all look good check for DC voltage on the end pins (20 to 30 volts)

be careful not to touch the transformer pins when unit is pluged in and the cover is off!

ON the str-de485 the sp.off lights up when the headphone jack is enabled, do you have the headphones inserted?

Your problem must be caused by the right channel (rear, front whatever..)side feeding resistor on the power supply.
