Camera keeps loosing the time and date settings. When turning the camera on the lens does not open, then a screen asking to set the date and time settings appears - once date reset the camera works properly. Unfortunately this seems to happen almost everytime the camera is turned off.

The problem is the internal battery that powers the storage of time and date. If the camera is unused for a while, it will discharge. You must put a freshly charge battery into the camera and leave it with the power turned off for 24 hours to charge the internal battery. If it doesn't charge in that time, I suspect it needs to be replaced.

Have you check the settings for time and date have you saved it? You can also try to remove the cam battry for 2 mins. then put it back in then turn on the camera and then after few secs. turn it off, then see if the issue persist.

I have an Olympus 850sw and each time I turn it on it asks to enter the date and time. Why is that?

Most of the cameras with a date time clock have a secondary internal power source like a small watch type battery some point and shoot cameras use a storage cell which takes power from the main battery. This means when the main battery looses power the camera clock will hold a setting for about 1 day or 24 hours. To keep the camera clock set you need to keep a charge in the main battery. Here is a screen shot from the manual explaining this function.

How to re-set date in the camera?

turn on your camera and go to menu. top of the screen you will see 3 camera tabs. choose the 3rd screen with the wrench on the camera. this will take you to what you need to change the date. scroll down the screen till you see 'Date & Time', then open it up by pressing the 'ok' button. You should be seeing a screen that asks you to set format. continue to the month, date and year, then time after you have entered your settings, press ok. after your done, press menu button to return to the viewing screen for picure taking. your camera may go to a blank (black) screen while no action is taken. If this happens, just press your menu key and return to the 3rd tab and proceed with the instructions.

Setting the date and time

No need to remove part of the camera case. This camera (Power Shot A510) does have a backup battery that is easy to get to. Under the rubber flap where you connect the cable, there's a little door you can pull out with your fingernail. There is a CR1220 battery - can be found at any jewelry store, as it is a watch battery. I replaced that and viola! No more messing with the date/time every time it powers off/on!
