My computer gateway running vista is extremely slow

My computer, a gateway running vista is extremely slow. defenders ran and said there was a problem with my hitachi hts543225l9a300 ata devicevolume:c:
my laptop is only about a year old and i am very far from a computer geek (said as a compliment) so I do not know what to do.. please help. things seem to always need to "catch up" even when I am just typing. web pages take very long to load and sometimes wont at all. even my windows programs taks so long to load that they time out. i have no clue what to do. is this a virus? is it because of firefox? i did update avast, firefox and i think windows (all automatic) or is this a problem where i have to buy a new hard drive?

    More Info:

(Sorry, it is hard to type like this. LOL. Thanks for the help)

Starting sometime after midnight Monday into Tuesday my computer started to go nuts. I was online and walked away for an hour or so leaving my comp on my firefox homepage. When I came back Windows was restarting. When everything came back up my computer was so slow. I kept getting temporary no response from firefox and then windows itself. it took forever to restart. When it did my avast real time protection was not running so I ran it manually. It did not find anything but would not run. I uninstalled and then downloaded the newest version. Then Windows Defender came up saying that it had not been run and it would not go away, so I ran defender, full system and it ran for over a day. It found nothing. Then I had an error pop up that there was a problem with HitachiHTS543225L9A300ATAdevicevolume:c:\
    I have no clue whathappened.
I do not know if I have a virus, if Firefox or Windows or Avast updated and somehow messed things up.
My computer is kind of working. It is very very slow and even typing this has taken forever because the keys even fall behind.
I was told that it could be a worm, trojen or something like.
Someone else said that it meant my hard drive was slowing killing itself. I saw 'fixes' for some but I am slow to try without knowing what the problem is.
I also read that there have been malware and update problems that might have caused this.
The first problem windows ever identified was the windows SQM Consolidator stopped working. I do not know f this matters.

I have a Gateway running Windows Vista Home Premium. The computer is about a year old. 64 bit operating system, amd turim x2 duel core mobile rm-72 2.10 GHz 3.GB

It also looks like some of settings have changed, such as views and minor things, but I can not be sure.

I tried disc clean and it gets tied up and stops running.
I am afraid to go into my systems and play around without help.

Ok, after last comments my computer shut down firefox and will not open. I can not open a web browser. I can log onto windows, connect to wireless but i can not get to a web browser, firefox will not open nor will windows explorer. (In am borrowing a computer right now.)
Should I give up (as more and more things stop working) and just get a new computer in a few months? Or is there some hope? A fix? A Restore? Can a use an old back up disk? Buy a new hard drive for a hundred, (can save for that much quicker than a new computer, Hundreds.) Please help.

Try a defragment, try a disk cleanup, Both available from right click the drive and select properties, when the window opens look for disk cleanup, when you have done that select that again, this time go to Tools tab, run disk defragmenter.
Also Start>>Run>> type in MSCONFIG, go to startup tab, and disable all those programs reboot and see if any better, if it is then re-enable them one by one, rebooting in between and see which one cause you problems, if any... Check for Viruses.
Go to housecall.trendmicro.com/ - United States -
and install whatever the site wants activeX and let the program tun and see if there are any virus, on the PC, and if there is it WILL remove them for you.
try all that if it still doesn't help get back to me.

I have a refurbished computer with windows defender on it. Can I put scanguard on it and leave defender on it to?

It may slow the computer down because they will both be running. I would suggest one or the other.

Is Free and monitored by Microsoft / Not sure about scanguard

How to fix windows defender for free

The Windows Defender software constantly scans your computer for threats such as spyware that may slow down your computer or try to steal personal information. If the software wasn't installed properly or is conflicting with other programs running on your machine, Windows Defender may not work correctly. To repair the software you either need to download the latest update available for the program, or you need to completely uninstall and reinstall Windows Defender.

Restart your computer's operating system. Double-click the "Windows Defender" icon in the system tray at the lower-right end of the screen. Click the question mark icon at the top of the Windows Defender screen and choose "Check for Updates." Select "Continue" if you are running Windows Vista. Wait for the updates to finish installing and click "Scan." Click "Stop Scan" if the problem persists. Click the question mark icon again and select "Exit Windows Defender." Click "Yes" to confirm you want to close the software. Open the "Start" menu screen and select "Control Panel." Select "Uninstall a Program" in Windows 7 or Windows Vista, or instead choose "Add or Remove Programs" in Windows XP. Click the "Windows Defender" entry and select "Uninstall." Choose "Yes" and restart the computer after the program is removed. Navigate to the Windows Defender installation webpage (see Below). http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=435BFCE7-DA2B-4A6A-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en&mg_id=10134 Click "Download" and double-click the Windows Defender installation file when it downloads to your hard drive. Go through the onscreen installation instructions. Open the "Start" menu and choose "All Programs." Select "Windows Defender." Click "Scan" to start a new scan for malicious software. Hope this helps

Was the DVD damaged in so way? Does it show in Computer? Does it need driver? Which Gateway do you have? Windows Defender can be downloaded or fixed online.Do you have a Anti Virus that has turned off Windows Defender? Computer running slow

Well...when using trend micro you shouldn't need windows defender. You should also try cleaning your registry. I own a new computer with vista as well. If your registry is just a little bugged up your whole computer could be dragging. Try the programs below and see which one you like best...

http://registry-cleaner.comodo.com/

http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm
You should continue cleaning your registry about 3 times a week.

Slow

I would clear your cache on your computer. Also would run Disk Cleanup & Defragment. It really depends on what OS your running because Vista can slow it down running on 2 GB RAM because thats the Minimum and the best would be 4 GB. I'm running 2 GB and it does run slow at times so thats why I use classic theme instead of Vista Aero. Also, for it being slow could be spyware or a virus. Thanks, GaComputerGuy

Pop ups, infections, viruses ,worms

If you have Vista, try running Windows Defender within Vista. If that does not work, Spysweeper will get it.
