Apple Video Rentals on Video ipod

I purchased 2 movie rentals from the iTunes store only to find out after I payed for them and downloaded them that they won't work on my video iPod because I purchased it in October 2007. It is not the new Classic Video but rather the generation before that. My friend has an ipod touch and the movies transferred from my laptop and played fine on the touch. Do I have to buy a new ipod or can I get rentals to play on my video ipod. I know how to use isquint, handbrake, mpegstream clip etc. I converted the files to a format I thought would work but the videos come up in quicktime pro with a blank screen. The file appears to be there, it's 1hour and 40 minutes but no video or audio just blank screen that the slider goes across until 1 hr 40 min. mark.

    Hi Ekse,

Thanks for trying. Please reread my post you missed many of the details.

I did not purchase the rentals in October 2007 (iTunes movie rentals
did not exist then). I purchased the video ipod in Oct. 2007. I
purchased the movie rentals from the iTunes store in Feb. 2008.
Rentals do work fine on the new ipod Touch and Classic ipods. My
question was how to get them to play on the regular video ipods (Gen 5)
rather than the Touch or new classic video ipods.

The software packages I mentioned in my post are video conversion
packages. The AVS conversion software you mentioned looks good but as
I mentioned I already have Quicktime Pro and the others so I don't need
to purchase another conversion package unless it can do something these
can't. I went to the cnet link you posted (thanks for trying) but it's
not anything different than what I already can do. Also I have a
Macintosh and AVS is only for Windows. In fairness
though, I did not mention that in my original post and I should have.

I do appreciate you trying to answer the question and I know it's a
tough one. I am hoping someone out there has an answer. The apple
store experts did not, but I've found they don't always know (or are
willing to tell) how to solve such issues, other than "buy a new ipod"
    :) .

You purchased RENTALS in OCTOBER 2007, that is about 4 months ago, The files shouldnt be playable anymore?

The movie was RENTED? not bought, it shouldnt work, so you need to buy a movie, so it doesnt get blacked out after the rental time is up.

Incase there is a software fault in the ipod you could try to perform a restore if you havent yet.

  • 1. Make sure you've reinstalled the latest version of iTunes.
  • 2. Open iTunes, and then connect your iPod to your computer.
  • 3. After a few moments, it will appear in the source list in iTunes.
  • 4. Select your iPod in the source list and you will see information about it appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes windows.
  • 5. Click the Restore button. You will be prompted with one or more restore options that may prompt iTunes to automatically download of the latest iPod Software. The 4 possible restore options are:

    • Restore Option 1: Restore - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod.
    • Restore Option 2: Use Same Version - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod, even though a newer version is available.
    • Restore Option 3: Use Newest Version - Restores with latest iPod Software version on your computer.
    • Restore Option 4: Restore and Update - Restores with latest iPod Software version on your computer.

  • 6. A message will appear prompting you to enter an administrator's name and password.
  • 7. A progress bar will appear on the computer screen indicating that the first stage of the restore process has started. When this stage is completed, iTunes will instruct you to leave iPod connected to your computer to complete restore.
  • 8. During the stage 2 of the restore process, the iPod will show an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remains connected to the computer or iPod Power adapter during this stage. Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see since the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
  • 9. After stage 2 of the restore process is complete and the iPod is connected to the computer, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear asking you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences similar to when you connected your iPod for the first time.

Try restoring the iOS device if backing up and erasing all content and settings doesn't resolve the issue. Using iTunes to restore iOS devices is part of standard isolation troubleshooting. Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
Before restoring your iOS device, Apple recommends that you either sync with iTunes to transfer any purchases you have made, or back up new data (data acquired after your last sync). If you have movie rentals on the device, seeiTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.
Follow these steps to restore your device:
    1. Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes before attempting to update.
    2. Connect your device to your computer.
    3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
    4. Select the Summary tab.
    5. Select the Restore option.
    6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the Back Up
option (see in the image below). If you have just backed up the device, it is not
    necessary to create another.
    7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up,
you should not have to worry about restoring your iOS device).
    8. When the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple
    logo while starting up:

After a restore, the iOS device displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen. For updating
to iOS 5 or later, follow the steps in the iOS Setup Assistant. For earlier versions of
iOS, keep your device connected until the "Connect to iTunes" screen goes away or
    you see "iPhone is activated."
    9. The final step is to restore your device from a previous backup.
If you can not restore your device then you will need to go to recovery mode.
Placing your device into recovery mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the other end
of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the
red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake
and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake
    and Home buttons.
    3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device.
The device should turn on. Note: If you see the screen pictured below, let the device
charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some charge, and then
    start with step 2 again.
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
When this screen appears you can release the Home button.
    5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
    6. Use iTunes to restore the device.

Itunes wont let me put a movie on m ipod

Not all iTunes video can be transferred to iPod, please make sure your video is compatible with iPod. If the video resolution or video bitrate beyond iPod limitation, even though they are mp4 video, you can't upload them to iPod. For example, some iTunes purchased movie are High definition movie, the resolution is too high to play on iPod, you can't sync it to your iPod. For more information about iPod compatible video, you can visit apple official website.

Or you may take a look at this step by step direction, it's about how to convert and put video to iPod, it works pretty well for me.

You just need to drag your song into iTunes library, then make a playlist with the songs, plug in your iPod to computer, iTunes will detect the iPod automatically, then click iTunes menu "File -> Sync iPod", the songs will be transferred from iTunes to iPod.

You'll need to find a friend or family member that has a computer to resolve this issue. The iPod touch needs to be restored.
Using the Restore function for your iPod touch is part of standard troubleshooting procedure. Restoring your device will erase all data from your iPod touch, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other data. All iPod touch settings are restored to their factory condition.
Whenever you restore your iPod touch, Apple highly recommends that you perform a sync prior to restoring in order to back up any changes since your last sync. If you have movie rentals on the device, see this document before restoring.
Use the following steps to restore your iPod touch:
Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed and running before attempting to update. Connect your iPod touch to your computer. Select your iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices. Select the Summary tab. Select the Restore option. When prompted to back up your iPod touch's settings before restoring, select the Back Up option. If have just backed up the device, it is not necessary to create another.
Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (As long as you've backed up your device, you should not have to worry about restoring your iPod touch).
Once the restore process has completed the iPod touch restarts and displays the Apple logo while starting up

How to download the movies in Apple Ipod. There is any softward for this, please tell me about this?

Are you on Mac or PC? You can buy and purchase movies through iTunes. Video LAN Client (VLC) can also convert some video files to the .mp4 spec of H264 as well.

Apple Quicktime Pro ($30) can also export with settings directly for the iPod or AppleTV

    Please explain further.

Your video must be at least 640 x 480 pixels in dimensions. Any larger I believe it will not transfer.

Then click on itunes 7 and download it. Once you download and install itunes, you are able to transfer all your songs from your computer onto the ipod. Or you can go to the ipod music store to purchase songs.

regarding videos: you'll probably have to convert them in order for them to fit onto your ipod. You can easily just google 'ipod video converter' and download one from there.
