Re: curtis mathis 1982 model
It is probably the tube failing. Not a fault you can fix yourself without the right equipment and knowledge. Some repairers do have what they call a "Tube Booster". Fairly inexpensive to have done but not always successful. There is however a chance of burning the guns while boosting, so please do not hold anyone responsible for that. It will have to be done at your own risk or a new TV. Good luck, JUS004

A explanation that may tell you what is happening:
Some of their sets had this issue. The picture tube has a metal screen inside directly behind the stripes that make up the phosphor coating on the inside of the picture tube.
It is called a shadow mask. It has perforations that line up with all the stripes on the screen (look close--red-green-blue stripes all outlined in black--tiny).
What is wrong is not fixable even if the tube is replaced----the metal used in these sets for the mask contains iron which causes it to expand in areas with real bright scene changes--
No need to remove question as I saw it and answer questions for most TV area problems.
I actually ten years ago worked for Circuit City--saw at least 5 sets (all larger Toshiba sets) with this issue. On seeing first one called our support staff and someone explained to me the issue---that set was under extended warranty and since the customer was angry the set was "exchanged" for a brand new set and the old one was disposed of.
picture tubes harsly ever go out i have work on curtis mathis tvs from the 70s and their tubes were great most like the leads within the tubes need cleaed in order to do theis take it to you local repair sop an they can burn the filament so that they are bright again.
No,all CRT tube tvs don't have digital tuner inside. They're analog tvs.Must buy the converter box,and hook it up to get the free DTV airwave signal.Trust me,i help an elderly person hook up this exact this tv model with a converter box.Try buy the RCA model converter box,it matches with this tv model very well.
