I have an 'old' DMR-E55EB recorder with my latest two RAM discs suddenly being 'write protected' without me knowing why. Is there any way to make them work in a read, write, and erase way again? If...

Very strange, but not uncommon.

The DMR-E55 (and its variations) is a 2004 model DVD recorder, so it is over 5 years old. If you did not set write/record protection on those discs, then it is likely to be a defect within the recorder, which may require workshop attention. You can always submit the unit to an authorised service centre for a quote and second opinion, to get an idea of the likely cost(s) involved, if a fault is found, then make a decision afterwards. Up to you.

Alternatively, it might be a good idea to cease using DVD-RAM discs and use DVD-RW/+RW discs instead if the unit accepts these as a recording format (or change brand of disc), and you intend to record more than once per disc. Or you could try the same discs in your PC if it has a DVD burner which is capable of reading/writing RAM discs as well as all other formats. If that works, the discs are OK.

If this does not work, then your only other option is to take the recorder to a workshop and have a qualified technician examine it thoroughly; but be warned - it may be expensive if you decide to do so. I hope it is nothing too serious.

It will not record. it is programed.

Is it the dvd or the vcr mode that will not record? What source are you recording from - ie are you trying to record a channel that the tuner can read or is it coming from a set top box? Is the clock properly set for timed recording? This unit only has an NTSC (analog) tuner. If you are recording OTA from a converter box, make sure the correct channel/input is selected for the unit to see the content from the converter box.

If it's the dvd, make sure that there is sufficient space on the disc. Also check that the disc is not finalized and is compatible. Try a different brand. Is the machine recognizing discs properly? If it isn't reading any disc, then the tracking might be off or the laser needs cleaning. Try a cleaning disc but the unit may need service. DRM issues may apply for content from a set top box and block the recording to DVD.

If it is the VCR, then make sure that the tape has sufficient space left and that the write protect tab has not been removed from the cassette. (If it has and you do want to overwrite it, put tape over the opening.)

For timed recordings, make sure you turned off the unit after programming the schedule. You disrupt the timer when the unit is on. Power failures will also clear the programming if they last more than 30 seconds.

The unit was manufactured by Funai for Philips. You can get the manual here: http://www.funai-corp.com/support/manuals.aspx . Search for the model number to get the PDF.

I hope these ideas help.

Can anybody help me, I purchased a Samsung dvd recorder model dvdvr350m, since purchasing the unit it will not recognize that it has recordable dvd's in it (dvd-rw),it tells me no disc inserted please...

Did the sales guy use the same DVD-RW that you did? Maybe the brand you are using is not of good quality and can not be recognized by the recorder. If he did not use the same disc did you notice if he used DVD-RW or DVD+RW? Some DVD-Recorders only recognize one or the other but this is kind of rare these days. I recommend verbatim brand discs. They should be available for sale at any shop. If you want the ultimate in quality DVDs then go with Taiyo Yuden. This Japanese brand invented recordable media and in addition to that they are obsessed with quality. www.supermediastore.com is always where I get my discs.

Problems with dvd reading

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY LG DVD RECORDER NOT EXCEPTING CERTAIN RECORDABLE DISCS . NO GUARANEES BUT TRY GOING TO YOUR SETUP MENU AND RE-SET THE ORIGINAL FACTORY SETTINGS FOR THE RECORDER THEN PUT A DVD CLEANER DISC IN YOUR RECORDER TAKES ABOUT TWO MINS TO CLEAN UNIT THEN TRY A BRAND THAT DOES WORK IN YOUR RECORDER OTHER THAN VERBATIM OR MAXEL . RECORD SOMETHING THEN EJECT IT . NOW TRY ONE OF YOUR MAXEL OR VIBATIM DISCS AND SEE IF IT WILL READ THIS TIME FOR RECORDING . GOOD LUCK . BEST REGARDS , blc7772001
