Question about Amana PTH123B25AJ Heat Pump Air Conditioner

1 Answer

Heat Pump was repaired and then went out again

Heat pump would not work, repairman replaced and repaired a wire outside. Pump worked again until the middle of the night. I had the defrost board replaced last year, could this be it again? Repairman is coming again later, but am frustrated with this situation. Had to suffer through two cold nights and don't want another.

Repairman fixed a wire? sounds a little vague. If the outside coil is covered with ice, then it may be the board. Most defrost boards have a test terminal on them. Touch something to the test posts and see if the reversing valve switches on and the unit starts defrosting. If nothing happens, then its the board. There could be much more things causing it not to work, but I need more info.

No heat from air heat unit

Heat pump will only work when outside temperature is above minus 13 celcius or 9 far. Efficiency at lower temperature lower very quickly, spend more energy than what it produce. Good quality machine or option will de-energize outside unit from operating. Wait until exterior temp get warmer and try again.

I have a Rheem heat pump/air handler; it draws 2.9amps with only the fan running, 13amps when the heat pump is running and 38amps with the heat strips on. My question is why the unit draws that many amps...

Sounds like it must be about a 2.5- 3 ton system. The 13amps has to be the compressor draw -normal. and 38 on the strips- normal. 2.9 fan -normal.

You may want to check your wiring to see where the outside unit gets its power. Theres nothing inside that can draw 13 amps. That almost has to be the compressor power wire.

Heat pump shut off 1 to 2 minutes, service yesterday for same problem told low on freon. Added freon, worked fine until it went thorugh first defrost, now back to same thing. Tech says compressor not...

It is possible that you have one or a combination of a few different problems here.

If your heat pump will not come on but the air handler works, the first thing you want to check is that the circuit breaker and disconnect for the heat pump are both on.

The next thing to check is that the heat pump is receiving a call for heat from the thermostat. If there is no call for heat at the heat pump, then your problem is most likely a low voltage issue. This could range from a failed thermostat to a low voltage wire that is bad.

If your heat pump has high voltage supplied and there is a call for heat present with no heat pump running, you are going to be isolating the problem to the heat pump itself. The problem could lie within any of the electrical components in the heat pump from a bad capacitor, a failed contactor, or a failed defrost control board.

I have a goodman ac/heat pump....worked fine last season...now only blows cold air, even in heat setting....help! thanx

Heat Pumps are not famous for being fast heaters. Give it some time to act. Is yours extracting heat from the air or from a water source. If from the outside air, consideration must be given to the temp of the outside air. It takes longer to warm as the temp outside drops.

Yours could be a different problem of course, but let it have a chance to work before you call the repairman.

I have a Rudd ubha and have been using the emergency heat for a couple weeks because the aux. heat won't work. Now I need the A.C. but the unit outside won't turn on. We replaced the control panal and it...

Did you replace the defrost board out in the outside unit? Or did you replace the control board just on the airhandler? You need to check if the board outside is functioning. Also, put the unit in cool and check to see if the outside unit is being called to come on. What could of happened is the unit was the compressor went out and that's why it didn't work in Aux. and only in emergency. I would just recommend checking the outside for issues since the inside unit is operating in emer. It could possibly be the tstat also. Just buy a tstat for a heat pump and follow the instructions. The key is to label your wires with what color is going to what terminal (r,w,g,o,y etc...) and then use the new tstat instructions. Better yet, buy the same brand t-stat. Hope this helps.

Heat pump blows heat half the time and cold half the time

It sounds like it is just going into the defrost cycle. Go outside and see if it is iced up. If it is, it reverses itself to melt the ice. Heat strips should come on if unit has them

Air conditioner not working

If they removed the compressor (gas pump) the wires would be disconnected so that it could not possibly be started. With the gas pump removed it is not meant to be restarted until the proper repairs are completed.

I have a coleman heat pump that is about 22 years old and never had a problem. but now my heat strips at times, start to operate at the same time the unit is cooling. thinks for any help

I would check the control wiring. At some point two bear wires are touching. When the cooling mode is energized it is causing the heat relay to also pull in. Check for visible damage to insulation at any point where two wires can make contact with each other.

Intertherm heat pump

FIRST YOUR OUTSIDE UNIT PROVIDES HEAT BY USING A REVERSING VALVE TO CHANGE THE REFRIGERANT FLOW.THERE IS NO HEAT STRIPS OUTSIDE SECOND YOUR EMERGENCY HEAT TURNS ON ELECTRIC ELEMENTS INSIDE YOUR AIRHANDLER UNIT.IT SOUNDS LIKE SOMEONE HAS WIRED YOUR UNIT WRONG OR HAS THE THERMOSTAT SET IMPROPERLY.WHEN THE HEAT PUMP CANNOT SATTISFY THE SETPOINT THE THERMOSTAT IS SUPPOSED TO TURN ON YOUR ELEC. HEAT UNTILL THE LOAD HAS BEEN REACHED AND THE HEAT PUMP CAN CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN IT.
