Re: HDD replacement

I have a HP Compaq nc6000 laptop with a bad harddrive(it failed the check disk utility in bios) when I replaced the harddrive I receive an error 'no system disc detected'. Is this because of the Drivelock on the PC? Do I need to unlock the old HDD before I install the new, or is it just a matter of modifying the bios?

After installing the new HDD I entered the bios and changed the boot sequence to look to the Multibay first and the HDD second. I then placed a copy of the operating CD (Win2000...The original XP restore CD is MIA) in the drive and boot the machine...then I receive the 'no system disc detected'

The bios doesn't display any HDD information...the old HDD is a 40GB and the new HDD is an 80GB both with an ATA6 interface and 5400rpm.

I have tried installing the jumper from the old drive since the new drive didn't come with one and still the same result.

Set the jumper on the HD as it was on the old one
can you see the HD when the system boots up
are you using window vista?
if there is a driverlock on your pc yes you need to unlock it.but this should not be a problem.
what size hard driver was there and what size hd are you trying to use.
check your bios setting. this can help

Good luck

If you have replaced the HD - this drive will be completely blank.
Your computer needs an operating system installed.
If you got a system restore CD/DVD with your computer - this is a good time to insert it and follow the onscreen instructions.

Alternatively if you have a windows install disk then this is a good time to install it.

Its also likely that everything on the old hard disk has been lost.

However - At a later date you could try and add it as a Slave disk to see if you can recover your documents etc once you have your machine up and running on the new disk.

Just replaced my hdd on Compac Presario 2100 but the system is not detecting it.

This model laptop came with a 60Gb hard disk and if you installed a much larger capacity hard disk then the BIOS cannot detect this hard disk.
For the BIOS to detect a large hard disk a BIOS upgrade is required (if there is one available) Check the HP/Compaq WEB site to see if there is a BIOS upgrade.
If not the try a 120Gb or smaller capacity hard drive.
As an alternative -
You can keep the existing hard drive in your laptop and use an external USB hard drive to store your data.

hi,
please check whether the hard drive is loaded properly into the computer.Turn on the compupter try to go to the bios of the computer and there do the harddrive long test.if the test is failed then the harddrive has gone bad.if the test is passed then try to install the operating system with a recovery cd's.if you don't have the recovery cd's then you need to call HP to get the recovery cd's.

HP compaq NX9420 fails to boot up; complains about system disk and i tried to install Windowsxp but it switchess itself in the process of installation

Hello Dear,

If you tried to install the windows XP on a failure HDD then it will behave like this.
You need to check your HDD first, Go to your BIOS and run the HDD Self test.
If it successful then Just format your HDD before installation it should work.
If it failed then you need to replace your HDD.

Hi,My HP Compaq nc6000 just developed a problem of not coming on. I have checked the battery and its okay. I have blown its internal parts and it remained off. It only indicates the orange light for some...

try taking the battery out completely and see if the laptop runs of the main power from the outlet, if so then the battery may have a bad cell in it and would need to be replaced.

Primary Batteries
6-cell Lithium-Ion (4.4Ah) – standard
8-cell Lithium-Ion (4.4Ah) – optional

Power SupplyExternal 65 watt AC adapter

from looks of it the battery has gone bad

My hp compaq nc6000 says nonsystem or disk error wont go further?

If you get an error message - non system or disk error and the hard disk is not detected in the BIOS, then you most likely have a faulty hard disk and chances are you have also lost all your data.
If you are desparate to recover your data, there are data recovery companies that can retrieve data from faulty hard disks but it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.
To get you computer operational again, you will need to replace the hard disk and install Windows, all the device drivers and your programs.

Compaq nc 6000

check for any utilities that might be installed by hp/compaq ... you can also check the control panel for anything referencing power management (but not the windows based one)..

You can also check the BIOS ( i think hitting F2 or F11 once the laptop boots up) and go through the options.
