Question about Projection Televisions

Toshiba model 42LX196 LCD has very light grey fuzzy line from top to bottom in center of screen. Does NOT look like a bad panel as the line is not as thin and pronounced as a bad panel would be.

I have checked this on the main b oard. It is NOT the answer.

  • ndswan Mar 07, 2008

Not a bulb problem. (Has no buld as such, has back panel lighting)

  • ndswan Mar 07, 2008

This set is the newer type set, about 10 inches wide with the backlit panel.

  • ndswan Mar 08, 2008

No lines on the edges, only a very light shaded line about 1/4 " wide from top to bottom in the center. The pix is Not folded in the center. The problem occurs in all modes and with all inputs.

  • ndswan Mar 11, 2008

You were right! There are 2 other very light lines, one on each side. NOW...What is the solution to the problem?

    Thanks

  • ndswan Mar 11, 2008

    Not under warranty.

  • ndswan Mar 11, 2008

If I am not mistaken, the vertical circuit would cause problomatic horizontal (lines across from side to side)troubles. Would it be in the horizontal circuit which would cause vertical problems from top to bottom?

Is the problem occurring in HD modes. There are several reported incidents of people noticing grey fuzzy lines going top to bottom against a green or blue backgrounds. Some people have even had the set changed over, to find the replacement has the same problem. It would appear that there maybe a performance issue with the set if this is true. Go and have a read of what owners of this set have experienced here.

do you notice the same lines a couple of inches from the edge also?

With your indulgence eagle, the link I gave had 2 parties state they have this line in the center of the screen, and in one case 2 units still in the store exhibited the problem also. These sets being brand new, it is highly unlikely that any capacitor(s) are "shorted". However in saying that, there may be one fitted back to front in manufacturing(I have seen this before), would certainly follow with the symptom being there on more than one set, and to varying degrees also.
Maybe I am wrong, but your " Electronic Capacitors" capacitors(I am assuming you mean electrolytic) used these days are often SMD types!

I have cut and pasted this to here from the link I gave earlier for clarity.

"I've got a 42HL196 that I've been really happy with until I noticed
three vertical lines or bars, one appearing almost in the exact middle
of the screen and two more on either side - although the one of the
left-hand side isn't as prevalent as the other two."

    and then this

"Once I got it at home, I examined the picture quality screen and other
funtionalities. After a while I found this line in the center of the
screen and 2 more on the edges of the screen. if you are not careful
you might not notice but I found it, boy I didn't want to go most of
    the time."

Just what I have read that seems to relate very well to the problem that you are facing.

I have been high and low looking for a solution for you. I suggest you get back to Toshiba about the problem or have a Toshiba endorsed tech take a look at it. There is probably a service bulletin about for the issue, but they(manufacturers) get a little tight lipped about "defects" Have not been able to find anything from my sources, but this does not say it doesn't exists or that there is not a solution to the problem. If it was there with brand new sets, you would expect there to be!! This is the best advice that I can give... so do I get the FixYa?:)

    cheers mate

The Problem is one or several of the Electronic Capacitors Shorting out in the Vertical Circuit. These Caps look like Cylinders with Two legs soldered to the Board. Thay have a Plastic coating over it in Blue, Black or Gray.I say it would be very inexpensive to fix. I've done many repairs just like this one

I think a service manual and schematic should get this problem in no time rather than burning your pocket on a tech if you need them please do ask me... This wont be too difficult to do it yourself..

After moved the TV, you can tell the top and bottom lins is not straight, tilt to the center screen

You need the Red Green and Blue lights realigned in the rear. Usually costs 200-500 and not worth it on such and old TV. Go to Wal-Mart or online and buy a new Plasma/LCD!

Just click below for convergence repair kit;

http://servicemanuals.vstore.ca/

Double images and colors are blurry .Blue,red and yellow wave coming up from the bottom of the screen on the lower left and fuzzy images this is a symptom is for busted convergence IC,you must replaced this IC in order that will works better again.STK 392-xxx ICs and it's associated resistor,this resistor automatically change value,can caused trouble even though you change the ICs.If you bring this to a service center they cost you $600 to $700,but if you buy the repair kit you can save more,don't wory it is very easy because there is installation guide including in the repair kit. Feel free to ask whatever the result... click the link for sample picture guide step by step installation;
