Suddenly my printer was giving 'unable to connect' messages. I checked all connections, restarted the computer and printer several times and reloaded the printer software. Now, to install the machine, I am being asked to: choose the Brother machine I want to install. It will not allow me to put in the machine name on this screen unless I select "custom" to install the machine manually. This screen will not accept any information I put in. HELP!
And thank you!

Are you using the wireless network printer function or is the printer connected by a USB cable? If you are using the wireless network, launch the printer's Wireless Setup Utility and run through it. (Check for problems with IP, signal strength etc.)
For USB, try resetting the printer (unplug it from the wall for 10 seconds). Check that the computer is looking for the printer on the correct port. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel. Double click on the Printers folder and right click on your Lexmark printer. Choose Properties then click on the Ports tab. Check that one of the USB port options is checked. (If you have a newer OS, Start > Devices and Printers and then right click on the printer.) Also try a new USB cable and a different USB port. If you have a print server or USB hub, try a direct connection.

Have you tried a different driver eg. rpcs or another version of pcl?Have you checked your workstations services app to check if your print spooler is running? Also when you print a config page from the hp it will give you your network details. To eliminate your network grap a crossover cable and connect directly to the printer and test.Let me know.
Plug out the usb cable from the cpu. Try deleting the printers from the printers window(START, Printers and Faxes), uninstall the software.
Power off the printer and unplug power adapter.
After the printer has been deleted from the printer window, plug it back in and reconnect back to computer.
Then try a new installation of the printer and software.
The pending documents that have been stopped should now not be in the spooled documents.
