Do you have a FN key. Sometimes on laptops you can inadvertently set the display off. If you press fn and probably F5 together the display will cycle between visible and not visible. It is usually used for when a laptop is connected to another monitor or projection device. If this does not work your display may be duff. Can you hear any hard disk activity noises within the laptop. Laptops are quite specialised to repair and very often the cost of repair outweighs the cost of replacement.

All dvds will not play in dvd rom on xps400

You can start from checking its general status (it is not clear from your description of the problem).
The first you can check if the drive is visible to the system
With WinXP it is in menu Start\Control Panel\System\Hardware\"DVD/CD-ROM drives" like in this picture, for example:
With Vista it is in menu Start\Control Panel\System\Device Manager\"DVD/CD-ROM drives". If you see it - click on it and check its status: "This device is working properly" or not.

If it is in the system, it should be visible in MyComputer as a disk drive as well. If yes (and still not working) then try another known-good drive to hook up to your computer and if it works - there is most likely a problem with your drive on hardware level -your drive need to replace it. If the known-good one does not work either - something is wrong on the motherboard or power supply (check power supply by pressing CDROM eject button - it's supposed to get open/closed if it is powered). For complete clarification you can check your CD-ROM with a known-good computer.

If system does not see it - you'll need to check its wire connections (switch off the power and unplug the computer case power cable before opening the computer) - there should be power (coming from power supply) and data cables (usually coming from motherboard) hooked up. The drive can be either IDE or SATA type - check to see how the cables look like.

If the both cables are connected, you can check BIOS: in the beginning of booting you'll need to press an indicated button to enter Setup (usually it is either "Delete" or "F2" buttons). In BIOS you'll need to check setup related to CD-ROM or/and IDE if anything funny is there (they should be OK by default).

That's practically all what you can do about it. You do not need any special software for accessing data files as photos or docs - the disk should be visible in MyComputer just as any other data disk. For video and DVD - MS Windows Media Player is fine.

I hope it'll help.

Dvd player won't open

first of all is the system under warrantty?
secondly the paper clip should work in any case
its either u are not applying proper presure or the clip is short ... the clip should be atleast 2 inches long and when u insert the clip at some point u will feel there is no place inside thats the time u apply presure and it should open ... its a way to open the tray which works on mechenical parts so there is no point of failure with them

Toshiba A305-6825 laptop prolem (no visible CD/DVD Rom drive). In Device Manager: HL-DT-ST dvdram gsa-t40F ATA device error. Media test failure. There appears to be CD/DVD combo drive firmware...

You seem to be onto things (though your problem classification was generic instead of for your Toshiba model A305.) Install all the updated drivers for your laptop from the laptop's support site (Toshiba's, that is) so you can use your drive. Drives fail sometimes, and you could try sticking an old movie or something in there instead of nothing, but it is likely it is just the missing driver.

HP PC will not boot up

the first thing that i would do is see if you can go into safe mode and try booting from there . when it comes up choose the one that is already hilighted. if it still wont boot then open up the tower and unplug the power from the cd rom. if it is your cd rom i would go and by another one or return the cd rom.

hope this works

Pc wont boot

Have you recently experienced a power surge or had an electrical (thunder) storm in your area? Potentially your motherboard and/or processor could be toast since the fan running and CD Rom drive opening will continue to function because they receive power separately from the motherboard via the power supply. If you have access to a different compatible processor, you could try to install it in the motherboard to rule out a motherboard failure, otherwise you're looking for a new motherboard.

if not close it.

1)left clik my computer
2)double clik the cd rom drive, making sure theres a disk in it.
3)right clik on my computer
device manager
look for a yellow exclamation point or red X where the cd-rom is.
high light the cd-rom
right clik

I understand that your cpu is not turning on and the repairer confirmed that it is the issue with the mother board. I suggest you to please check the smps fan spinning or not. If its spinning then then the issue could be with the mother board. If not try changing the power cables.

Next check whether your cd rom light is glowing. Even if there is an issue with the mother board, as the power is supplied by the smps the light  should glow if the light is not glowing its clear that something must be wrong with smps.

Please provide us the result of the above steps so that I could assist you further.
