Vizio L37 lcd tv randomly shuts off

The Vizio L37 LCD TV randomly shut down. Some time it shuts off in 3 minutes and other time it shuts off in 8-10 minutes. When the tv shuts off, it can be power right back up then repeat all over. Is this a power supply problem or the tv digital main board causing this?

Having the same problem with my 37" LCD, know my way around a soldering iron and need to know what needs replacement to fix this problem?

Mine started doing this randomly through out a week, then days, then hours now within minuets it's doing the same thing.

We have the same exact problem. Except after a month it now won't stay on. We called Vizio and they said that I was a little over a month out of warranty that the problem might be either a power cord or a main board and would cost us about $600-800! For that kind of money I can buy a new TV. If this is a common problem you would think there was some kind of recall on the TV. My 62" Sony HD Tv had a blue spot issue, Sony had a recall on it paid to have it picked up fixed and delivered~they offered to sell me one of their new model Plasmas for almost a 1/3 of the price. My Sony is 5 years old and Sony fixed it, my Vizio is a year old and doesn't work, you would think Vizio stood behind their product. I'm interested in seeing if anybody comes up with a solution.

Sometimes the screen flashes white for less than a second, then returns to normal. Screen randomly shuts off 2-3 times a day - the LED indicator 'thinks' the screen is still on, and continues to glow green, until power button is pressed. LED turns amber, then 10 seconds later, flashes green and amber for 5 seconds. The TV then works normally until randomly shutting off again (typically hours later.)

  • northofnada Feb 01, 2009

42 inch LCD that does this ranodmly as well. Typically after first power on of the day it will stay on for an hour or so, then off it goes, Manual on and then off minutes later, then manually on and then it typically stays on for hours fine. First LCD TV I have ever purchased and will be the last Vizio TV I ever buy or recommend.

I have the same problem with my vizio 42 inch. Usually turns off after first turning it on. Sometimes during the day. Just now turned off as I am typeing this. I also loose sound 2 or 3 times a day. I call Vizio and they keep having me try different things. I think they just don't want to help me. I am going to call again everyday till they get it fixed.

    I have a 42" plasma I bought from Costco.

When it first it shut off I thought because it got to hot. I then caught it shutting down after only 10 minutes. Then I started getting red scratchy lines in the black until it warmed up.

They came out and replaced every board in the TV. It worked for 3 months and now it has shut off twice in 4 days.

The Costco warranty expires in 4 months and at this point I think I'm going to demand a refund.

I also have a 37" Vizio VU37L that would shut off randomly. Vizio replaced the remote. Didn't fix it but great I now have 2 remotes. Then sent someone to replace all the boards. Support was pretty straight forward and fast about trying to fix problem - not usually runaround and they are based in the US - can understand English.

So far so good. Can't imagine that it would reoccur but who knows.

SOURCE: Vizio shuts itself off

There may be some components failing in the power supply or one of the circuit boards that are causing too high a current pull.

I realize that this answer is very vague. Without doing proper diagnostics, it is impossible to guess at something like this.

Out of warranty repairs on these sets can be very expensive. I would suggest that if the set is going to be expensive to service, it would be best to replace it with a known brand name that offers an extended warranty with local service. You will pay more, but you will have dependability and better quality.

SOURCE: LCD controller board location on Vizio L37

Display controller is usually under the Main board which you remove to get access to it. Display controller connects to the suis-boards which then send signal to the screen of the TV.

If the TV goes in standby, then it is in protection mode.

Ensure also that the fault is not coming from a faulty receiver box sending
bad signal, check if you get same problem on DVD with no receiver box
connected.

Try first leaving the TV power cord unplugged for some times, let say one hour or so.

The flashing light indicates a diagnostic state called protection.
When the TV goes on protection there are only two possible causes.

1The internal circuits are jammed because of electrostatic charges accumulating on capacitors, or because of a wrong voltage read by the main chip on your monitor controller board. this started the protection circuit.

2 The protection circuit detected a wrong voltage or abroken contact, identified an internal fault and kicked in , starting the flashing light.

If you are in situation one, then the TV will reset just unplugging power cord for one or two hours, sometimes even minutes.

If you are in situation 2 , then there is an internal fault.

If under warranty contact the manufacturer ringing the number on the user manual

If you want to repair at your own expenses, just locate any good qualified repairer.

On LCD Pay particular attention at inverter and power board, power board can be inspected looking for bulged or leaking capacitors, then tested with a multimeter. The inverter is more difficult to test , there is need to read voltages, should be done by a tech. Also the LCD controller board can cause same problem

SOURCE: vizio 47" lcd no picture no sound has power

this could be one of two problem. first, check if you have back light. If you do then the problem is with the M/B. Second, if you don't have back light then the inverter is bad and needs to be replace.

Vizio tv randomly shuts off will come back on if unplugged

My first guess would be your power supply. if that does not solve the problem then your signal board.

My Vizio shuts off after 5 - 10 minutes. When I turn it back on, it continues to shut itself off from 1 - 10 minutes. Can you tell me why this is happening and howto fix the problem? Thanks. Model: VIZIO...

Try this: on your remote will be a button labeled "menu" that should contain a list of items you can adjust...I'd look to the automatic timer feature and check to see if somehow this has been set up to turn off the TV.
