I have a Lexmark Fax - Model # X4270. It has been good but now has started showing a message "Enter *9* to start fax" when I am receiving a fax. When I enter the message it tells me to "Enter the Fax Number."

It could be a cartridge problem, or perhaps something that can be resolved by a firmware update. I found this on Lexmark's site regarding the Pro series:

Sending fax error message."Phone

No. Most of the time this "phone line error" can be caused by the telephone connection or issue on the phone line where the fax machine is connected.
Hope this will help.

When phone line is connected, error message displayed: Ext phone line in use! and fax machine does not respond to any buttons, etc.no dial tone, no operations work.

two questions... 1) what model is it? and 2) did you do anything right before this happened? it almost sounds like you have a phone handset on this fax and it is either off-hook or its plugged into wrong jack in rear of machine. if you don't get problem solved, write back with more info/clarification and i'll try to help.

good luck,

I can not receive a fax

First, make sure the phone line to the fax is plugged into the LINE socket, NOT THE PHONE socket on the machine. Next, try calling your fax machine from a cell phone to see if the fax answers. If no answer, you may have to go into FAX SETTINGS or FAX SETUP from the Lexmark menu. You may have to change any or all of the following: RINGER SETTINGS, AUTO RECEIVE, RECEIVE MODE, TONE/PULSE DIALING, OVERSEAS MODE, ETC. Trial and error getting the Lexmark to answer calls from the cell is probably the easiest way. BEFORE YOU START, print out or write down each setting you may change. This way, if it does not work, you can go back to the original setting.

Did you try Lexmark.com. Should be an easy exchange. Unless they prove you did something to cause the damage.
