Question about Dell Photo 964 All-In-One InkJet Printer
Hello all, I got a Dell 946 AIO printer from a friend. Working fine for friend. I have a WinXP Gateway desktop. I downloaded the driver software and firmware update from Dell. Installed the driver ok. printed alignment page ok. Tried to install firmware update...seemd to get to the end of firmware update but then printer started to constantly beep (every 5-10 seconds or so). I tried unplugging/replugging-in both the power and USB; tried restarting computer with printer on and attached and then eventually unplugged printer and uninstalled Dell printer software. Tried to re-install software but get stuck because printer still beeps when power is connected and the driver-installation software doesn't recognize that the printer is plugged in. Help! Any suggestions? Why is it constantly beeping? It is not a problem that is addressed in the manual. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!
Same thing happened to me....yesterday I went online at www.dell.com
to download the latest firmware & driver for my Dell 946 Printer.
After downloading the firmware the printer went haywire and is rendered
useless. It emits beeps and the green power light will stay lit then
flash every 3 seconds or so. There is no read-out on the lcd display.
I phoned Dell only to be told I should not have downloaded the firmware and that Dell does not recommend downloading firmware. If that is the case then why is the firmware listed on the Dell site with instructions to do so? I was advised that no support could be offered because the printer is out of warranty and was told to uninstall the printer and re-install. I have tried everything, including uninstalling printer, unplugging printer, etc. and nothing has helped. I have researched online and note that this is a recurrent problem. This problem is noted in the forums section of Dell.com - I have followed directions listed in the forum section of Dell.com as noted (see below websites) but this has not fixed the problem....
Since this seems to be a known problem and the problem is actually caused by downloading firmware from the Dell site I feel it is an injustice not to offer some type of support to rectify the problem. I have always bought Dell products and advised others to do so, but with this problem I feel that I will be changing my brand that I purchase.
I will be contacting Consumer Reports - I feel this warrants some type of recall!!

I just experienced this problem today. The beeping means that when you tried to update the firmware it damaged the printer internally. I would have to assume there is some kind of chip in there that can be flashed and it got cooked by the firmware update. Dell is sending me a new one.

The firmware upgrade, then beeping just happened to me. A Dell tech support supervisor (after I escalated to him) said that "sometimes their firmware upgrade off their website will "burn" the printer. Since it is 1 mo out of warranty, they said they will not replace. I can assure you, I will never buy a Dell product again
