Fridge runs but is not getting cold

A leak has allowed all the coolant (used to be environmentally-harmful FREON) to escape. So, fans & pumps still work, but no coolant means no cooling.

New compressor about 6 months, and A.C its not working anymore

That fact that it was repaired 6 months ago makes me think the service tech may have left a very small leak in the joints of the tubing where he installed the compressor. If I'm correct the freon leaked out. The leak will need to be located--repaired and the freon recharged. This is just one possibility. Something else may have gone bad but if it is running and not getting cold my guess is probably correct.

Freon leak in refrigerator?

no refrigerant leaks have little to no odor and if it was leaking bad enough to smell it the unit would be out of refrigerant and not cooling...the problem sounds like gases coming off of a veggie of something un-covered inside the fridge--have you put any veggies in the fridge or freezer un-covered check real good if one or a piece of something has fallen behind something else where you cannot see...all else fails remove all your products from the unit and clean and get a box of odor control arm&hammer to rid the for a leak in the sealed system i think your just fine.

Sat in storage for 4 months. Now icemaker not making ice and frig is not cold enough to keep milk from souring.Your ideas? Whirlpool Refrigerator model: ED5JHEXTQ00

Check condenser fan that it is turning. Also it is possible you lost freon (leak) when it was moved. Take back cover off to see if fan is turning. Feel compressor to see if it's too hot indicating it lost freon, also feel the larger copper tube going into the compressor ,it sould be cold and sweating.

RE: sweet smell from refrigerator

Hi Donna53,

I'm Harvey the Master Plumber.

Your question is: You've got a sweet smell (that you think of as a gas smell, but it's not really) coming from your 24 year old Amana refrigerator. It's cooling fine so it's not a gas leak and my husband says freon is usually odorless anyway. You've cleaned it 3 times - once with water and Mr. Clean, once with diluted bleach, and once with a mild solution of vinegar and water. You've even left it off and open with a fan running into it. The smell is still there. The pan under the refrig has been scrubbed too. The smell seems to be coming from the vents in the freezer. At least this seems like where the smell is the strongest. But maybe that's just because of the re-circulating cold air. You're exasperated. Any ideas? It does have any auto ice maker, but that's hooked up to the water main with a filter on it. (filter is clean).

I can think of two reasons for this. The first and most likly is electrical. Look carefully at the components especially the capaciter, it's on or near the motor. If it is leaking or out gassing, replace it. Wire corrosion can cause a wire to slowly give off fumes. Look very carefully i.e. testing meter is helpfull here. I've already expirienced this and it sure was hard to find. Less likely is a freon leak. You won't smell the freon itself but if the oil is a little burnt, that can be smelly indeed. You will need a special leak detector for that. Anyway my money is on the electrical.
