Depends on brand and model, of course, but normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the screws you need to remove.

Door does not stay closed

If you gently push up on the door latch heads (hook-like devices sticking out of the door) there should be spring tension. If they just flop right up, the spring is off inside.

Normally the problem is not the spring, but a broken spring mounting tab on the door latch head (hook) assembly or the inner door panel.

If it's the door panel, it's usually easier and cheaper to use epoxy and some kind of hardware to fashion a new spring mount.

The door latch head (hook) is easy to replace or repair if that's the issue.

The service manual for the R-408LS (the model you posted it under) is here.

You can order parts from the Sears Parts Direct Web site.

I need to replace the door on the microwave. I have a new GE Spacemaker Excel Microwave with a broken handle and door. I want to put my "old" microwave door on it.

Hi First I do not recommend replacing the new door unless you know it fits exactly like the old one and the wattage rating is the same and the seals and door locks are the same. However are you just wanting to change the face plate so it will match your kitchen then that may be do able. To find out you need to look at the wattage output of both units to see if they are rated the same, however you can go to this web site. Type in both model numbers and look at the two different doors if they have the same parts number you can change it, best bet is to call them and ask if they are interchangeable. If you then decide to tackle the repair get back to us so we can tell you what to do and not to do in order to replace it. Hope this helps. http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/modelsearch.aspx?model=JVM1640SJ

When I open the door to the microwave there is no light. The key pad still works until I hit start and then the pad says "door". I can not get it to turn on. Any suggestions.

Hi,
It sounds like the door interlock is broken.
Have a look for any hooks or latches that may have snapped.
If the door interlock is faulty - do not use this microwave untill a replacement is ordered and fitted.

Can anyone get a hold of the Jenn-Air Microwave M170W Button to open the door (Part# 56001009)Mine cracked and the part has been discontinued. Thank you.

Same thing happened to me. I couldn't find a replacement part, but I was able to make a fairly easy functional repair. If you take off the microwave cover, you can reach the back side of the control panel where the door release button is located. With a screwdriver or your finger, you press down on the top attachment tab (it's the swivel point that holds the button in place) with just enough pressure to remove the button. You'll have to do something similar to remove the other half of the broken button. If the two pieces of the button fit neatly together, then you can epoxy a piece of flat metal or rigid plastic to the back side of the button in order to join the two halves. Be sure to clamp the two halves of the button tightly together while the adhesive sets to get a tight fit and minimize the crack line. Let it cure, then replace in the microwave. It's not cosmetically perfect because there is still a hairline crack in the button, but it's not that visible and the button works well. I can't say yet how long this repair will hold up yet. I suppose that will depend on the quality of the bond you achieve when repairing the button. Good luck.

The door latch head (hook) is pretty easy to replace or repair if that's the issue.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

We have critical safety & disassembly info at our site, linked here.

Normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the screws you need to remove.

Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) here that demonstrates how it's done.

Oven door

It's probably not the spring.

It's probably a broken spring mounting tab on either the inside panel of the oven or the "door key", which is the part that has the hook like projections that go into the chassis behind the door.

Normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the screws you need to remove.

Broken door hook

The plastic cover on the inside of the door is purely push fit.
To force it off I used 2 strong stainless steel dinner knives.
By easing one knife between the internal glass and the plastic cover I managed to spring one corner by using the other knife on the external bottom edge of the plastic cover.
Try concentrating on one end and once this springs out it is easy to free the rest without having to take it off completely.
The hook is simple to do but be careful with the spring.
All in all it took 3 minutes!
