Question about HP Pavilion dv4000 Notebook

2 Answers

Black screen I have my son's hp dv4000 laptop. It won't go to desktop. It goes to black screen with a PXE error on one line and a media failed error on the next line and the it repeats the same information over and over again. I can play a dvd in the computer fine, by pressing and holding the Quickplay key. I have done the harddrive test from the f12(blue screen) start it says hard drive failed, but I think it's wrong because I can still watch movies. can anyone help. the computer is 2 years old and out of warranty. The geeks want too much money and my son is a freshman so you know I am broke. I need a inexpensive fix. TY

This model has built in multimedia that does not need the operating system (or hard disk) to play movies and music. So it probably is a bad hard drive. Laptop HDs are notorious for failure. That being said, it doesn't take an expert to replace a hard drive and reload the OS and you can get one pretty cheap (<$50) on eBay. DO NOT get a Hitachi or IBM though - my pref is Western Digital or Fujitsu. You will also need the OS disks which you may not have as many systems are putting the install disks on the 1st HD sector. You can usually order disks cheap from HP if you have your purchase info. If you can downlaod and burn an iso image to CD from another computer, the "Ultimate Boot Disk" (search Google) is a great free testing CD.

Are you sure the BIOS is set to boot from hard disk?
It looks like it is trying to boot from network (PXE) and then from floppy disk.

Laptop won'y start up has non-system disk or disk error

The error PXE-E61: Media test failure usually means the hard diskhas failed or the hard disk needs re-seating or the disk controller is faulty.First - re-seat the harddisk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot andgo into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If itdoesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty. Then the hard drive needsto be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer orlaptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioningcomputer/laptop again.

If the sound you are referring to is a clicking sound, then it is a hard drive failure.
Your computer is trying to boot up the operating system from the hard drive, but when it fails to access the hard drive, it tries to boot up from other devices configured on the BIOS. Apparently, your next choice for booting the operating system is set to the LAN card. Hence, you get the message "PXE-E61 Media test failure", which means that the computer tried to boot up the operating system over the network but it found out that your network cable is not connected to your computer's network interface card.

My laptop isnt working.as soon as u turn it on a black screen comes up and the message display says PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable PXE-M0F: Exiting Broadcom PXE ROM!! how can i fix it

It goes to a network boot rather than booting straight to the HDD. restart your computer and press f2 immediatley. you are now on the BIOS page. check if your hard drive is detected and if not call Lenovo to have it replaced/repaired. if it is detected, after the PXE error, your computer should boot up just fine.
