In general. If when copying you get a Full BLACK page printed then the scanner lamp is not lit. As no light is reflected into the image scanner, it interprets this as BLACK information so therefore only black is printed. Look into the ADF while the document is being scanned and I bet you will see no green light at all. A new Contact image sensor should cure it.
Check the document feeder is it aligned properly. There is a small magnet and sensor magnet on the Document feeder right front sensor under the plastic that side ensure they are aligned. Does happen when you make copies?
It may be a bad hinge on the document feeder. I have seen several times where the left hinge ( when looking at machine from front) does not close all the way. Close the adf and look at the gap between the copier and the adf. The gap should be the same from the front to the back. If the gap is bigger at the rear ( when looking at the left side of the machine) then you need to replace the left hinge. You can also try pushing down on the document feeders' left side as it feeds the paper. if it works while pushing down, then it is the hinge.
Uh oh. Do the prints come out the same way and the faxes? If you're lucky, it's something on the document feeder or glass. If you're not so lucky, guess what the paper passes over? Likely you may have put something in the document feeder that scored the drum. However, before you get all nervous, look at page 119 of your manual. There are instructions on cleaning the scanner glass, the ADF window, the corona wire, and the drum unit. It's a messy job :-)
there is probably something in the paper path, double check and make sure no piece of paper is in it.
there is a small lever in the adf this is the sensor it should be able to move freeely and have a spring action, is it stuck?
are the guides set, and set to Letter?
