Laptop music playback cuts out

having ripped music cds onto my laptop, when i play the music back, it keeps cutting out. it plays fine on my mp3 player. i'm using a dell inspiron with windows vista and windows media player. i am totally non-it-knowledgeable so please use layman's talk. thanks, samjam
