Question about Western Digital 500GB My Book World Edition 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

I'm trying to hook up your Western Digital 500GB to my Mac and I can't get the icon on my screen. I'm connecting with a firewire cable that was provided. I also tried the USB cable to no avail.

I am able to communicate between my iMac and myworldbook.
The procedure is as follows (see screen shots below):
1.  Determine the ip address of MyWorldBook
2.  On Safari address line enter the command:      "smb://10.0.1.199"                  {10.0.1.199 being the IP address of myworldbook}
3.  Select "Public" when ask which volume to mount
The hard drive will show up in Finder under SHARED below DEVICES.
You can automate this task and have it execute at startup.
To determine the IP address, access the HD through your web browser (see Western Digital web site for information on shared storage manager.   http://www.wdc.com/en/library/usb/2779-701026.pdf  see appendix a of user's manual

My WD External hard drive is no longer recognized by my Mac. It was fine when I went to bed. Showed no warning symptoms that I am aware of.

Hi,

I would like to know the way the Drive is connected to MAC.
Have you connected it using USB or Firewire ?
If you have connected it using Firewire, Try connecting it using USB 2.0 Cable.

Let me know.

Ron

Western Digital MyBook suddenly no more responding. It worked perfectly over years, but one morning I entered the office, and the blue rings were on. But iTunes didn't play any songs, the library is...

You may be able to remove the hard drive manually and try another USB adapter to access it on your computer.

Might be pootched though.

Rule of thumb is to never save your files to only 1 source. Its not a question of if a hard drive is going to fail but WHEN.

I cannot copy files FROM my Western Digital 500GB

Hi,

Check the file system of your hard drive. If your PC is recognizing it, check if its a FAT or NTFS. If it is NTFS then you have to reformat it using your Mac and choose FAT. Mac OS recognizes NTFS as a read only drive. If you plan using it with your PC and MAC you should format it using your mac and choose MS-DOS in disc Utility. You cannot format the drive using your PC Computer with a FAT file system because of the capacity. Only Mac can format it with a FAT file system.

Western Digital Hard Drive will no longer mount

HI. So I had this problem twice with the same hard drive. I didn't have the money to replace the hard drive the first time, but this time I did, so my ultimate solution to offer is to purchase a different HD and migrate the data from the current one.
How did I get the drive to turn back on so I could get the data migrated to the new HD? Persistence! I kept disconnecting and reconnecting the drive, making sure to shut the drive down by pressing the blue button on the front until the drive powered down. I disconnected, waited for some time (between ten and 20 minutes) Then I reconnected the FireWire cable first, and the power cable second, waited for it to mount - and eventually...
IT DID!!
Wow am I happy. I'm going to run a series of diagnostics on this one but I'm probably going to retire it. Too bad because 500 gigs is a lot of space to loose, but this being the second occurrence makes parting all the easier. I mean, my entire iTunes library is on this thing!
So, just keep trying - plug the drive into the computer, then connect the power cable and wait for it to come on.
I'm running Mac OS 10.6.4 and an older machine 10.4.11, both of which were able to read this drive before, the 10.6.4 had the problem initially, then both machines had issues. Ultimately the 10.6 machine was successful with a FireWire 400 connection.
I hope this helps!!

Can't accept Quadra 500 on my owerMac G5 Quad

Scrap LAcie!! Sounds like in this case, it may have been jostled around during shipping. None the less, Lacie drives are nothing more than bricks waiting to fail. Go Western Digital, but if oyu can, zip straight for Seagates!!!! Professional grade!! ALways check the cables, the ones that come with them are bottom bin cables, made by little singapore children with no fingers..... Invest in a good cables...a drive is only as good as the weakest datalink.

Cash on the warranty!!!

Keep me posted.

Installing Firewire 400 on a Western Digital 500gb external My Book Pro

Don't connect the USB and firewire at the same time, use one or the other. In general for USB, for the very first connection, it is better to have the computer fully booted, and the MyBook spun up, before connecting the USB cable. After that, you can boot the computer with or without the MyBook connected or turned on. For the firewire connection, check your manual for the correct order of connection and power on.

USB and firewire 400 are roughly comparable. USB is theoretically a little faster, but you will see little difference. There are other factors that can affect your actual performance, so your best answer is to try a test yourself. Time a copy of a very large file, and a copy of a folder with a very large number of files.
