The Iphone has two screens. The LCD that shows the image and the glass touch pannel that covers it. These screens can be purchased separatelly, and the installation is not difficult.
See in the link below a video that explains the installation, an how to buy the replacement screens:

I suggest you search for somebody who repairs iPhone's and ask him or her to check the internal electronics of your device. An iPhone is a powerful device. Every inch inside an iPhone is used for electronic components, chips and cables. If you drop an iPhone the chance is big that the internal components have damage. If you're lucky it's only a loose cable inside the phone. A technician can just reconnect it but they need special tools and knowledge to open up and repair your iPhone.
You could also go to a store and let them send in your iPhone to the Apple repair centre, but this will be very expensive.
The cheapest way is that you search for a local technician who repairs iPhones. They will actually repair your iPhone. The "repair" service from Apple is actually more like a replace service. They will throw your defective iPhone away and will send you a new iPhone (same model as you sent in) and the repair will cost you the same a a new iPhone.

Is iPhone 5 durable considering the fact that it scratches easily?

Yes it is! Iphone 5 beats Samsung Galaxy in a drop test. The screen doesn't crack easily (while the aluminum back is scratched easily). And it seems that iPhone 5 can be repaired more easily that iPhone4.

My iPhone screen cracked. I replaced the screen and when it was put back together. I get the plain white Screen. The phone is recognized when hooked to iTunes but does not allow you to do anything because...

I know of a place here in Winter Park that can fix your screen. They just repaired my Ipod cracked screen. It took about two weeks after the part was miss shipped, but so far so good! I can give you the information if you'd like to call them and drop it off or ship it to them for repair? Please let me know! Chris chrisab123@live.com

I dropped my iPhone and the screen is shattered. I don't want to pay for another phone. What should I do? The screen is cracked only at the top so it is still usable, although I'd rather have it fixed.

somebody has to open the iPhone and replace the part. The cheapest way is to do it your self and you should get aways with around $70. The part is available on ebay. If you want to pay to have a service do it for you there are third party iPhone Screen Repair Services. To try to do it yourself, here's a iPhone Repair guide on how to disassemble an iPhone. As you can see from the guide, this is not quite that easy. Maybe a tech savvy friend can do it for you.

I too have a cracked screen. I'm not sure how it happened, but it doesn't matter. I was quoted $125 to fix the phone- not worth it:(
