In shooting mode all is working fine but when i switch to playback mode the camera shuts off, everytime. so of course no picture download to my computer. anyway i have new batteries with well enough amps and all that, its not cold or anything. have you guys or gals got any ideas for me thank you very much....
In the end it was my memory card which suddenly went faulty.after formatting it, (see above added comment) it worked for some pictures then i switched to playback and this time it said memory card error and shut down. well if it would have said this in the first place would have saved a lot of trouble i almost threw the thing away.(the camera) so i puts a new card inside and its working like new, all the playback i can handle. goes to show its not always as bad as it looks with a little patience.....merci

Switching between Shooting and Playback.....32 .... Please note that Canon digital cameras are intended for personal use and should never be used .... Do not operatethe flash with dirt, dust or other items stuck to its lens. ..... PowerShot A520:.
Nov 30, 2007 - It was a fix for a Canon A520, but am not sure if it would work for ..... I have a Canon Powershot A540 which will not turn on and lens is stuck out extended.... (even when they are new) in camera mode and not playback mode.
You could try to help the lens coming out if you hear the motor trying to. Or hold the camera with the lens downwards to let gravity help as well. Hope that will help. Or the lens mechanism will be faulty and the whole lens needs to be replaced. But such a repair might not be worth it because of the costs and the value of the camera.
If you have the manual for this camera turn to page 15. This tells you how to switch between Shooting Mode and Playback Mode. This is achieved simply by pressing the DISP button. This button is located below and to the left of the FUNC/SET button. Pressing DISP repeatedly toggles between Shooting Mode and Playback Mode. I would suggest you try these steps with your Mode Switch in both positions alternately.
well depeneding where you live, you should call canon and find out where the nearest canon store and you can also ask them how costly the repairs will be... i doubt very much seeing as it is an internal problem... but ask just the same...:D
