Question about Toshiba 42HP83 42 in. HD-Ready Plasma Television

3 Answers

Toshiba 42hp83 Custom installer... installed 3 years ago, 2 months later tv failed, had authorized dealer repair under warranty, they said they had to remake all the solder connections (bad from the factory). Worked fine for a little over a year, now the tv works fine for about 20min, then the picture pixelates and eventually turns black. If you change the channel or turn it off and on again, it works for a minute or so then does the same thing. I just need to get some idea of what it will cost to fix or if it's not worth it I'll junk it. Thanks for your help

Is there any way I can test these items myself? I have the service manual, which doesn't really say a whole lot other than the locations of these boards, and am an experienced electronics tech (not with tv's though) I have a full suite of sencore equipment at my disposal. Thanks for your help.

Thanks. The audio does work fine under all circumstances. Is there a way you can check the flyback autotransformer or the horizontal amplifier with a meter? I hate to just start replacing parts and not knowing if they are bad. Thanks, Ken

Thanks for all the good advice, you guys have been more than helpful for the $9.99 you charge. One more question... If you had to start replacing components, which ones would you start with if you were me, or would you just take it somewhere, or would you junk it and buy a new one. I could spend $400 on this tv at the high end, and if it works it would be worth it... but seeing as you can get a new 42 for a thousand bucks, I'd hate to waste $200 for someone to diagnose it and tell me it's going to be a $600 or $700 repair which I wouldn't spend the money on. Obviously I'd like to spend as little as possible. Again, thanks for your help.

Hi,

The repair will cost anything between $200-300 or may be more. When the audio is working and the picture is dark (loss of raster), the problem is almost always (but can be many other things) either a bad flyback autotransformer (which generates the high voltage for the picture tube) or the horizontal amplifier (which drives the flyback).

Here are few more troubleshooting steps you can try:

ONE: Disconnect the power cord for 4 hours. Then when you power it back up the internal soft codes will automatically reset to factory defaults.

TWO: The whacking test is to just bang or smack the set with your hand on the back, side, top, etc., to see if there are loose connections or cold solder joints inside that are acting up. If so, the banging should knock them back to normal and the set should restore. You might have to use some creative banging and some have had to put a book or magazine under one corner to torque the chassis enough to get it to work reliably.

Goodluck..

If it is still under warranty then i suggest you to get it replaced or repaired by them.

You can still fix it, the problem came out the same as like the problem before, could bepossble that the soldered one has loose again. I can't give you a exact rate it will be depending on the work to be done on your TV. Just send it to authorized service center to be fully checked and correct the problem. An exact parts can still be available to them.

Well...from what you're saying, it appears that you're at the front edge of a major board failure, most likely the system controller/video board..could be power supply too.

costs will range around 300 to 400 for the parts, and depending on where you are, around 50 to 100 per hour(figure two hours minimum) for the labor..

so, you're looking at around 500 or 600 easy to get it back on it's feet, assuming it's only the boards, and not the main screen itself.

well..the signal interface is the whole issue here. Unless you can simulate those signal paths, and have a sequence diagram(usually reserved for the factory techs) then you'll be flying blind. The signal/voltage levels usually don't appear in the service manuals, since so few folks do component level testing or troubleshooting any more. It's all board swapping these days.

the flyback transformer generates a high voltage, which requires a special device for measurement, for isolation purposes.

I admire your interest in doing all this yourself, yet you would be best served when you have a full service manual, which you can purchase online. To suggest that a five dollar set of helpful advice, replaces that sort of information, is inspired.

so, now that you've gleaned some of the best information, are you going to decide who's advice helped the most?

Hi We bought a Sony Bravia 40" 2 1/2 years ago. Model # KDL40EX400. After about 14 months we started to experience something very bizarre. The TV would turn itself off. No lights on the screen. Af

At some point you have to cut your losses, this is the reason I suggest getting an extended warranty with coverage (including the maker) of 3 years, 80 of the 140 sets in our shop are less than 3 years old, if this set had that they would have to fix or replace the set----One reason I choose to answer your question (I do this here for free) is this set ought to have a error buffer, when set fails it will count the event and that also indicates where the issue is.

Most of the Sony sets for the last decade with set off and using the Sony remote: Display, 5, vol down, and POWER will if set comes on bring up a display with a number of shortened items listed----they should all if the set has this be a zero. Any with a number indicates a issue and the number indicates the number of times this event has happened.

We had a similiar issue with our SAMSUNG Plasma TV. It had a 2'or 3" vertical bar of random colors on the right side of the screen. It would also go away but then come back. Fortunately for us the TV was still under its original 1yr manufacturers warranty. We called the customer support and they scheduled a service call. The TV repair man took our TV to the shop and replaced the defective components. It took about 3 weeks for the repair.

The LCD display is bad. If it is past warranty it is time to buy a new monitor. You have a block of pixels that have failed.

Blue Haze in middle of screen progressively getting larger

This one is easy. WHen this happened to me, I simply called GE extended warranty service up and bought an extended warranty. I waited 30 days and called them up with my problem. A repair man showed up a few days later with the 1200 dollar light engine and installed it and left. Then I called GE up and cancelled the warranty. Total cost?: 48 bucks

Sorry to hear that. You could fix it with Best Buy or the warranty service repairman recommended by Panasonic.com

I am in the A/V installation business, my recommendation(Pioneer Kuro Plasma TV or Sharp LCD.)Very good track records from my clients.

Overall Warranty 1 Year - this may be incorrect.

My monitors have 3 years, did you purchase a extended warranty?

check with hitachi or your dealer about the warranty it may get it repaired for free, if its still under warranty.

maybe not but its worth it to check.
