Most likely the ribon that attaches to the board is damaged or not seated in straight. also, try updating your chipset/ mainboard drivers also, is could be a software issue. Go to the Manufacturers website and look up any new drivers or r-install the old ones.

also, it may just need to be cleaned out.

Good morning!
First thing to do is to figure out if this is a keyboard problem or not. Plug an external keyboard in and try it. if the problem goes away, you've probably got a keyboard problem. If it doesn't, you probably got a motherboard problem. If the external keyboard doesn't make a difference, there is not too much that you can do and you are probably looking at a motherboard replacement.
Once established that you have a keyboard problem, take the keyboard off of the notebook and clean it real good. Using compressed air, a brush and firmly tapping it on it's side while using these.
Check the cable and connectors on the keyboard to make sure they are properly seated and not damaged. Plug it back in and try it. If it works, good for you! You've just fixed it. If not, don't mess with it. Get a replacement and you are good to go.

Its normally a tiresomejob to try and fix a keyboard, try to check if there are ANY stack keys else you need to open the keyboard and clean it.

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

Sounds like your keyboard in in UK mode, but is labeled for US. Or the other way.
In a UK keyboard, Shift+' (the key which is two spaces to the right of "L") should give you an @ sign.
Depending on your Operating System, you can use the CONTROL PANEL and REGIONAL SETTINGS to set the keyboard to be a USA keyboard, and then Shift+2 will give you an @ sign.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_layout is a good reference for keyboard layouts.

Instead of getting the @ symbol when I press shift +2 i get "

you need to hold down ctrl and function on the left side of your keyboard, and then hit the shift key on the right side of your keyboard. Then let go of right shift while still holding down the control and function keys, and then hit right shift again.

these blue keys are french keys. if you change your keyboard settings to english US or UK, it will get rid of the blue functions, but for some reason, they tend to turn themslves back on again after time. Most likely due to automatic updates followed by an auto restart. Also, I find that the issue only arises if I am in my hotmail account.....no issue in Word docs.

My keyboard has several keys that have little green charactors on them. For example the u has a 4 and the "i" has a 5 and the "p" has an * I have hit something that turned this feature on and now i can't...

You can put your keyboard in "Numlock" mode if you have a lot of numeric data to input and use these keys for numbers rather than the normal letters. The key sequence varies by manufacturer but it's typically going to be labelled with a rectangle around text such as "NUM LK" and is activated by holding in the FN key and then pressing the labelled key. Deactivation is the same.

As you've found out the hard way, it can be really confusing when this happens accidentally.

A key (which one?) changes the letters all keys type

You're hitting SHIFT and CTRL -- which changes the keyboard input method, i.e., for French keyboard, or for DVORAK keyboard, or for Scandinavian keyboard.

Access CONTROL PANEL, and use REGIONAL settings to "uninstall" all keyboard-layouts that you _never_ use.

Hold down the Scroll Lock key for several seconds. The switch should beep briefly and blink. Hit either the "1" or "2" key on your keyboard to switch to the corresponding computer connection.
