Question about Philips 50P8341 50" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

The bulb recently burnt out. Need to replace it.

Need to replace the burnt out bulb.

How much would this cost and where/how do I do this?
Would it even be worth trying to fix it?

It's a Phillips Magnavox 50" projection TV, about 9 years old.

    Hi Slint,

The audio works but no picture. Do you have a ball-park figure of what this could cost to have a professional fix it?

Someone wants to give this TV to me because they don't want to deal with it so I want to know if it's worth taking and if it can be fixed.

    Thanks so much.

Your set doesnt have a bulb. Its a crt projection unit. Is the set completely dead? If so troubleshooting the power supply is needed. If the audio works but no picture, then the deflection/HV circuits will need troubleshooting. Let me know if I can assist you further.

thats hard to say. repair shops can be widely different. would say a reputable shop would be a couple hundred for a module and probably a couple hundred in fees diagnosis and labor. Around 400 would be close. But cant say for sure

It sounds like you are describing the face plate glass on the lamp module. That would mean that the replacement lamp has failed. Generally people replace their lamps with the cheapest replacement that they can get. This is not a good idea as you should now know. Cheap bulbs give cheap results. Go to and get the bulb for your unit and you will not have this problem again.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.

My tv wont turn on and the lamp light comes on is it burnt out or do they need to be cleaned

if the lamp light is on, it means replace the projector bulb, they cost between 60 and 200 dollars and you must be careful when installing it, not to touch or rattle the bulb.
