Question about Philips 50P8341 50" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

The bulb recently burnt out. Need to replace it.

Need to replace the burnt out bulb.

How much would this cost and where/how do I do this?
Would it even be worth trying to fix it?

It's a Phillips Magnavox 50" projection TV, about 9 years old.

    Hi Slint,

The audio works but no picture. Do you have a ball-park figure of what this could cost to have a professional fix it?

Someone wants to give this TV to me because they don't want to deal with it so I want to know if it's worth taking and if it can be fixed.

    Thanks so much.

Your set doesnt have a bulb. Its a crt projection unit. Is the set completely dead? If so troubleshooting the power supply is needed. If the audio works but no picture, then the deflection/HV circuits will need troubleshooting. Let me know if I can assist you further.

thats hard to say. repair shops can be widely different. would say a reputable shop would be a couple hundred for a module and probably a couple hundred in fees diagnosis and labor. Around 400 would be close. But cant say for sure

My tv wont turn on and the lamp light comes on is it burnt out or do they need to be cleaned

if the lamp light is on, it means replace the projector bulb, they cost between 60 and 200 dollars and you must be careful when installing it, not to touch or rattle the bulb.

I was stopped by a cop saying I had no taillights, I wasn't able to get to the mechanic right away, the next night my daughter had a similar experience- besides the bulbs, what else would I need to check...

Before buying a bulb/bulbs I would check the fuse box located in the engine compartment. Check the fuse labled 'tail lights' and 'stop lamp'. The fuse can burn out due to a faulty failed bulb. If the fuse is open (technical language for burnt) then don't replace it until you replace the bulbs as a faulty bulb probably caused it to blow. When bulbs die, they sometimes short out On the other hand - I recently had one tail light go out ( I was lucky and caught it and replaced the bulb right away). A week later the other one was burnt out. I'd bought a two pack of bulbs, and had put it in the glove box so the bulb was handy and no tools are needed to replace it. Just open the trunk and remove the cover behind the light. The socket comes out with a counterclockwise twist. Mine were in pretty tight so be careful if you use pliers to grab the socket as they're plastic. Pull the bulb straight out and get the exact replacement. The bulb number is printed in very small print on the bulb itself or on the socket depending on bulb type. The autoparts store clerk will help you get the correct bulb much faster if you have the old bulb in your hand.

No tail lights or brake lights

Check the relays associated with the tail lights, I believe that the tail light relay and the turn signal relay are two different entities. Hopefully that helps.

It sounds like the bulb just simply burnt out. Before I spent any money on the camera, I would first reset the camera back to factory settings and try again. The cost of replacing the bulb might be more that the cost of a new camera!
