When using replacement or refill, Canon software will not detect them as new or filled with ink. Original cartridges have chips programmed with "counters" which determines how many times it could print. As long as it is printing, it is not really a problem just press the resume button.
Do you know what?. As a matter of fact,it is not compatible cartridges you buy. It is refurbished cartridges that repackaged with other brand as if this is their product. I say it is original cartridges that once empty and repackaged. So that's why when you install the cartridge the ink level stays low. You can make it sure by comparing it with new original cartridge. Find original cartridge, may be you can borrow from someone, which ink level still full and install on your printer. I am a hundred percent sure ink level will show properly :).
Do you know for sure the original cartridge was empty? Take a clean pencil with eraser, and gently "erase" the electrical contacts on the cartridge and the printer where the 2 connect. See if that helps. If it is USB, unplug it and plug it back in. You might try to uninstall and reinstall the driver for the printer.

Hi, I had the same problem and found the answer from one website. Heres how you can fix it 1) Open the cover 2) Remove the empty cartridge 3) Close the cover without putting in the new cartridge 4) Open the cover and install the new cartridge 5) Close the cover and restart the printer (press power save to shut down and press it again to turn it on
It should go into cleaning and when you check the Ink Status monitor, it will detect that the ink is full.:) Hope this helps, it worked for me
