Ecently a small dull black dot has started appearing on my canon power shot A630's lcd screen but when I review the pics taken prior to when I noticed this problem, no dot appears.

1) this is indicative the lcd camera has been faulty.
2) you must replace it.
3) contact your company supplier, and get the parts, you can do it yourself, only need small screwdrivers and common sense.
God bless you

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help. http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2009/05/simple-fix-for-stuck-shutter.html

Black dot on my pictures.

This sounds like dust on the sensor. You'll need to clean it. Google the words "cleaning a DSLR sensor" and you will find sites explaining the procedure with pictures and info about where you can get the supplies.

No image/sound mesage when I try to view pictures taken

I would try formatting the card, and trying with new pictures. If that does not work, you may need a new main board. The main boards on that model are prone to problems. You will have to decide if it is worth fixing, if formatting does not fix it. If you want to sell this camera, contact me at: mrfixitmark at comcast dot net I can use this camera for parts.

Viewfinder has no picture

This is a common problem with this camera that was a recall by Canon after it came out. You would be past the recall period. Your camera has a bad CCD.

No setting can cause white spots on the picture, this is a fault.

By the way you can reset settings on this camera to initial state by simply removing and putting back camera batteries.
Alternatively you should have a reset command on camera settings menu.

My opinion is that this is a fault and not a settings problem.

Typically there are three kind of faults that can cause this problem:

1 - Dirty lens or water inside the lens:
The lens may be dirty inside, for example because of water condensation on internal surfaces, this will cause blurred dots or black dots. The lens must be taken apart and cleaned in this case.

2 - Defective CCD sensor.
The CCD sensor is the chip that detects the picture, if you get well defined white or colored spots on picture that is probably a defective CCD. I think this is the more likely in your case. To fix this the sensor must be replaced.

3 - Defective video chip on internal board.
This can cause any kind of problems, however it is quite unlikely.
It is an expensive repair.

RED DOT

Hi,

If the dot is not visible in print, but only on the camera's screen, the its only the LCD that is faulty.

If the dot is visible on screens and in print, then yes, it could be the sensor. Try taking pictures without the digital zoom. Chances are the dot is only visible with the digital zoom because the picture is interpolated.

If all else fails, you can try cloning out the spot in an image editor on the computer.
