You do not have to reset the whole device. There is a setting you have to adjust to get the unit to speak street names. You have to go to the button on the bottom of the screen that looks like a wrench. Press this. You should see a button marked "Locale" or "Languages." Press this, then look for the spoken language button. It might say, "American English" Press this, then select a language with "(TTS)" next to it. This stands for Text to Speech and will allow the unit to speak street names.

How to make it talk

For your GPS to speak, please select the sound files. Procedure explained below. Please note that although all GPS speak, only those that has an "S" in their Name (for example: ONEXL 340S) speak the street names. If there is no S at the end of their name, you can select any sound file for your GPS to speak. Not all sound files speak out the street names. If you would like to have the street names spoken, you need to select a voice that ends with computer. For example, the voice file selection: Simon, English UK, Computer will speak street names. But the voice file, Bonnie, English US, will not speak Street names. Dave, English US, computer will give you street names but Lori or Mandy, English US will not. Procedure to get the street names spoken: Tap on main screen. Tap on change preferences. Tap on arrow. Tap on change voices. Tap (select) a voice that ends with computer. Tap select. Tap done till you reach the main screen.

Cannot get spoken street names

I have the TomTom XL V2 UK, ROI & Europe and it doesn't speak the street names, if that's what you mean.
Presumably your model is the same.
Check the specifications to see if 'Text to speech' is supported.
If not, it won't say the names.

Garmin GPS Model 205 - does it give street name?

I don't believe this unit offers a street name function. The hard drive is not powerful enough.

I have a Nuvi 255. It does not speak street names

Did you select Text To Speech (TTS) one?  If the voice doesn't have (TTS) it won't speak street names.

Speaking the names of major streets

It will only tell you the names of the streets if you use the COMPUTER voice. The other voices will not announce street names. So go to your voice selection and pick the computer voice...either male or female.

Question
: My nuvi is supposed to speak street names when giving voice prompts but it doesn't. How can I fix this?
Answer: All of the Garmin automotive GPS units that speak street names are also loaded with basic voice prompts (i.e. 'Turn Right in 500 feet') as well as 'text-to-speech' voices that speak street names. If one of the basic types of voice prompts has been selected, the voice prompts will not speak street names.
In order to change this setting on the nüvi line of products, please follow these steps:
  1. In the Main Menu, tap on the Settings icon.
  2. Tap on "Locale"
  3. The second line on this screen has a picture of a mouth. To the right, the current voice for the GPS device is listed. Tap it to change the voice.
  4. Select a voice that is labeled with (TTS) at the end. These voices will speak street names.
  5. Select "OK". The voice has now been changed.
The device should now speak street names.
