Question about Canon PowerShot S1 IS Digital Camera

1 Answer

Camera and PC don't talk to one another

Canon PowerShot S1 IS, laptop with Windows XP. I used to be able to download the camera to the laptop using Windows explorer. Now when I plug the USB cable, the laptop no longer recognizes the removable drive - I get no indication on the laptop (or on a desktop) that the camera is connected. The camera knows that the cable is connected (it freezes and does not accept inputs from the camera controls such as the menu button), but it gives me no opportunity to move images to the PC. I have tried two different cables and two computers with the same result.

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

Powershot A470. used to be able to download pics with no prob to my computer. Got a new pc Samsung with windows 7 (RV510) but for some reason it cant download to my old pc either.. just seems its not...

Windows7 usually use x64 bit system operation, drivers which run in windows XP or Vista can be uninstallable in Windows 7 because XP and Vista use x32 bit system operation (except certain series).
See your OS from Device Manager (Windows+PauseBreak > Device Manager), 32 bit or 64 bit. Then you can download the driver compatible with your OS from here :

Since I can't reproduce all the funny symbols used in the manual, I'll refer you to the "Using the Self-timer" section in the manual (page 49 in my copy). If you need the manual, you can download one from

Trying to download my pictures from Canon Powershot A430 onto my new laptop Windows 7. Downloaded the disk and now trying without success to download my pictures onto the computer. Help??

Supported windows Operating system Windows 98 Second edition(SE)
Windows Me
Windows 2000 Service pack 4
Windows XP SP 1 and SP 2 Canon PowerShot A430 has no update about the new driver software for windows 7 Try doing this direct transfer in your computer 1. Connect the camera to your computer using the supplied USB cable of your camera. 2. Set the mode dial to (playback) and turn on the power.
The camera and computer will be able to communicate. 3. If there is no pop up window that has Canon CameraWindow, Click the [Start] menu and select [all Programs] or [Programs]. followed by [Canon Utilities], [Camera Window], [PowerShot-IXY-IXUS-DV 6] and [CameraWindow] 4. Download the images.
* Download the images using the camera or the computer.
* By default, the downloaded images are saved into the [My Pictures] folder. ** If the above process does not work you can just use the memory card of your camera and connect that on your laptop. (some laptop has built in card reader) The memory card works like a flash drive and you can just transfer files like transferring from one folder to another. ** Issue on the operating system compatibility.

Canon PowerShot S3 IS & Windows 7

This is correct. The S3 is discovered by windows 7 and will allow download of pictures by Windows Picture download. The Canon Utilities software - Zoombrowser - will not work with windows 7 as the software cannot detect the Camera via Windows 7.. Also, Camera window will not start, if using the PC/laptop for remote image recording. If you virtualise XP within Windows 7 this still will not work. The only solution at the moment, if you are deperate, like I was (as I use the Remote Capture process a lot), is to either stick with Win Xp or Dual boot XP on a smaller partition.

Windows Vista Compatibility

Your camera is not compatiblewith Windows Vista. If downloading the images to the PC running WindowsVista, please use a third-party card reader.
When using a card reader, please confirm that your card reader is compatible with Windows Vista.

Try setting your camera to mass storage instead ptp.
Reinstall the software of canon. Also see if the camera is in transfer mode rather in shooting mode.
Check if your card is accidently locked somehow.
Always try to load original driver cd and software that came with the camera.
