Perry,

Generally when a computer can't find hard drives, it could mean either of these options:

  1. There really aren't any hard drives in the computer.
  2. The hard drive(s) is not properly set in the BIOS settings for the motherboard.
  3. The hard drive is indeed in the sytem, but the cable somehow became unplugged.
I hope this helps. Take care and have a great day!

It very well may be that the HDD (hard disk drive) has failed. If you are running windows, you can try running system repair or try chkdsk /r from the command prompt, both available on the windows disk; however you may need to take the machine to a qualified technician if you are not comfortable performing these tasks.

How do I recognize my SimpleTech, 500 GB external hard drive?

could be some solutions for this.
  • hardrive is damaged and is not working. (no cheap solution)
  • hardrive lost format, and it need to be formatted again.
  • windows plug and play can't assign a drive letter.
this last option you can make it entering:
start > right click on my computer > Storage

then identify your hard drive (plug it and unplug it, Plug and play will show it,) then assign a different drive letter, and that's it. if it is not working try to format it from there, but be aware that if you format it, you are going to lost everything.
the only thing you can recover ir the hardrive as hardware. not the information.

hope the information helps.

god luck,

Hi, i've got a problem. I can't store a movie on

Hello. :)
Your pen is probably formatted with the FAT32 filesystem, there is a limit to how big of a file you can copy to it. If the file is over 3.5gb you cant copy it to the pen. What you need to is backup your 300 pictures, copy them to your computers hardrive and then format the USB pen. Follow these steps:
Plug in the usb pen-> Head to "My Computer"->Locate the usb pen->Right click it and hit "Format"->Choose "NTFS" in the "File system" tab->Quick format->Hit start->Done.
Hopes this helps. :)

Externe hardrive not working

Check the cable and power supply to the external drive. Has it been format for your OS? What type of interface, i.e. USB, Firewire, SATA, etc.
Goto Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager.
See if the interface for the external drive is shown and working.
Open "Computer Management Console" and select "Storage". Do you see the external drive?

Computer won't recognize external usb hard drive

try it on another computer if that dosent work you should
reformat your computer but first backup all your data by putting your another internal hardrive on your computer and move all your files you need to the empty hardrive and after that take the hardrive with all your stuff in it off the computer and then reformat the hardrive which the external hardrive does not work on and install a new operating system then put the other hardrive with all your stuff back on your computer and transfer your stuff into the hardrive with a operating system then try the external hardrive

OR
you can burn all your stuff into a CD or a DVD
OR
you can put all your stuff into FlashDrives and then after you reformat the hardrive with an operating system put your stuff back into the computer and after that the external hardrive should work

My desktop hardrive (C) is running out of memory. I've attached an exterior hardrive (E) to the computer with lots of available memory. However, I'm still getting a message that I'm running out of...

Just do the following steps and your issue will be resolved.

1) Delete all unwanted data from Drive C.

2)Delete all data that you have copied from Drive C to External HDD

3) Open My computer and go to Tools---> Folder Options---->Click on Viwe Tab----> Check 'Show hidden files and folders' and select OK.

4) Go to C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp and Delete everything that you ee inside Temp Folder

5)Go to C:\WINDOWS\ here you will find folders like $hf_mig$, here you eill have to Delete all the folders starting and ending with $ sign.

6) Empty Recycle bin and restart the PC and your issue will be resolved.

Compaq Presario S3040SE PC Desktop was working fine. when i turned it on next day screen says operating system not found. restart. now monitor wont kick on and hard drive light doesnt come on. only power...

Normaly when you get the error that the operating system cant be found, it is a indication that the hardrive has either gone bad, or somehow some of the system files got deleted. I would say though since the hard drive light wont come on it could be the hardrive has shut down completely. But you still should see the company image of your computer when you start it up, (the bios screen)

A bad hardrive would be my first guess, 2nd problem if its not your harddrive would be a new power supply.

You need to format the external drive. Format the drive as primary drive ans in FAT32.
Insert the external hard drive into the USB port then Click on Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management.
Then right click on Disk 1 removable drive and click Format. After the flash drive has been formatted it will indicate that its Healthy.
