I have a brand new black cartridge, but my printer doesn't print black and white documents. The flashing display on the printer says "Ink Empty Cyan", "In Empty Yellow", "Replace Ink" and "Near Empty Magenta" in that order.

When I attempt to print, the print job just disappears after showing for a brief moment that the status was "Printed".

However, when I go to Control Panel->Printers->Brother Printer->Properties, and try to print a Test Page, it does create an entry in the Printer Status, it shows "Error - Printing".

I have verified that the connections are OK as I can scan a document and save the file on my computer.

When you choose to print, there should be a properties/preferences tab. Select it, and there should be a color selection option.

My brother CIP-J140W is only printing in cyan. I had accidentally put the cyan cartridge in the black cartridge spcae. Despite changing them around, cleanre the head etc, it is still only printing in cyan....

Oops, You really have to print, selected black, till all Cyan ink is gone. This could take a while. Cleaning the head, won't solve anything.
If you really want to clean the ink out of the head and everything, you need special cleaning fluid. Refill shops do have this fluid. You should bring some cleaning fluid in the tube under the black cartridge, in the tube where the ink is going in. If you have a syringe you could try to gently press some fluid through the tube. Not to strong. could damage the head.
After placing back the black cartridge, select clean the head and let the printer do some black and withe print jobs, till the cyan is gone.

But it could also be due cyan ink has run out and ask to be replaced as new. Please check the contents of cyan ink may have run out, if still a full release catrid cyan and black, then attach it again, then go into maintance, and do head celean and do nozzle check or test printing

I cannot get my printer to print. I have black ink and all other colours except cyan. I want to print in black and white but it won't work, please help

Hi there!
In order for you to print you need to refill your cyan ink cartridge. Even if you just want to print black and white.

Black and white prints are not black

Sorry, steve, that you are experiencing this problem.

According to canon.com's website regarding the i9900 InkJet Photo Printer:

Why color ink may be used when printing in black and white Even when printing in black and white, color ink is used for the following reasons:
  1. Automatic cleaning of the print head.

To prevent the print head nozzles from clogging, the print head is automatically cleaned periodically. At that time, a small amount of each color ink is consumed.

Therefore, although printing in black and white is performed, color ink is also consumed.

  2. Color inks may be used to create black.

When printing in grayscale or on photo paper or when duplex printing, although printing appears in black and white, the color black may be created using the three (cyan, magenta, and yellow) color inks. Printers without a pigment black tank / cartridge will print black / grayscale will create a composite black using color ink even on plain paper.

Therefore, although printing in black and white is performed, color ink may be consumed.
  3. In order to keep the heavy black ink from smearing on the page or in the printer, color ink is used when duplex printing to help create black text.

    ---
I might suggest taking out the color ink cartridges leaving only black there, but some printers don't take kindly to this. So, you may have to further experiment with magenta, cyan, and yellow to make it at least seem b&w to your best eye's judgment.

Good luck on this.

I replaced an ink cartridge because the printer stopped working and showed a message that the old cartridge is empty. However after putting the new one in but the printer still refuses to work and shows...

maybe the cartridge is wrong, release it and clean the electrical contacts, put them again one by one, if notting happen, try this
Solution As the printer operates, it moves ink from the ink cartridges into a printhead reservoir. The printer does not deliver a message when an ink cartridge goes empty, because it still has ink in the reservoir. The printer continues printing until the ink level in the reservoir falls to a first trigger point - then a message appears advising the printer owner to Replace Cartridges Soon . At this point, other cartridges that are empty but have not reached the trigger point are also mentioned in the message, to save trips to the retailer. After the first trigger point, the printer can continue printing until ink levels in the reservoir reach a second trigger point. At the second trigger point there is only enough ink left to perform vital servicing tasks, and a new message appears, saying Ink Cartridges Empty . The options offered depend on the usable inks remaining. If no options are offered, the cartridges indicated must be replaced before printing can continue. The Ink Cartridges Empty options are described in the table below: Ink colors out Option Print mode possible All Cancel None Black

AND

Cyan, Magenta, or Yellow (any or all) Black only Continue with other colors Cyan/Magenta/Yellow mode (composite black)

Text and photo quality will differ from those printed when all colors are available Light Cyan or Light Magenta (either or both) Cyan, Magenta, or Yellow (any or all)

(Black still available) Print with black ink only Grayscale

My cyan cartridge shows as empty. My black

No. You need all the cartridges installed with functioning chips for your printer to work. The reason why you need all the colors when all you print is black is because a small amount of color prints when you print black. The manufacturers want to make up their R&D costs on the printers by selling lots of expensive ink.

My printer wont print black and white only

My Epson Stylus cx8400 uses ink so fast. I would like to turn this into a black and white printer only. The problem is, I am out of one of the color ink cartridges and it won't let me proceed until I replace it. Is there a way, in the mode it's in now, to get this to print with the black and white only? I am nearly out of ink on all color cartridges now and do not want to purchase more at the high cost they are.

Thank you!

The ink cartons are full. Printing is not taking place

Hi I think I had a similar problem, I let the black and cyan run down really low. then it took a week to replace the cartridges. The result was no black and cyan. I put in new cartridges and of course no colour.

Solution: Take out the cartridge holder and take a cotton bud and soak all the ink pads in alcohol (no not beer)

I used clear alcolhol from the chemist, the reason for this is it dries out very well after the clean process with no contamination. Give the ink pads a good soak and rinse out in very hot but not boiling water and allow to dry. Then go through the deep clean process in 'printer maintenance'

You may have to do that several time but be patient and it should clear out and start to print again.

Won't print with just black ink cartridge

When you print, in the printing window, click properties, then click advanced. Most times you can select to print using black cartridge only. Unfortunately you will need to replace to get the printer working. If you need further assistance let me know.
Thank you,
Lee

Print black & white?

Your printer will keep using the color cartridges to keep the printing head working even if you don't print in color. If you need to print only in greyscale, buy a cheap HP printer (Printer only, not a PSC) and remove the color cartridge.
