Make sure that you do not have the PS3 on it's side. Lay it flat. Insert a MOVIE DVD first and see if it will recognize the disc.
If you continue to hear a grinding sound when the ps3 is laying down that could only mean one thing, you need a replacement drive.
Dont forget to Always update your Playstation to the newest firmware.
Sadly it sounds like your disk lense has been damaged beyond repair. The only way to fix your PS2 is by getting tech support or ordering the replacement parts and repairing it yourself (not recommended).
Hi, the optical lens assembly is damaged. you will need to replace this assembly asap. the assembly has become unstable and the alignment is compromised.
Hi, the discs will spin ??? The bubble in top right corner don't stop spinning ??? If you answered NOT the first and YES the second question ...... Then you probably have a defective laser lens like my 40 GB purchased in 2008-Nov. You have 2 choices: 1- Send it for repair (With warranty) 2- Fix it your self. It's no complicated, I did it. Just buy a laser replacement and do it. Look for videos in Youtube.com and will see that it's so easy.
u gota change ur ps2 lens...this problem always occures when the lens gets old!

Number 1, Stay away from PS3 for right now as it is very unreliable., If you must, get a good warranty.
Fixing the PS2. Get a magnifying glass and bright flashlight and pick the dust, dirt and lint from the Lasers optical path. Also , you might see smudges ot scratches that restrict the optics. . www.PlaystationClinic.com
Open the Case.
Clean the lens with Q-tip and Alcohol. This is only if you have the SCPH-30000 through 5000X models. If you have the Slim Ps2 do not use Alcohol on the lens. Use Glass cleaner instead.
In this case the optical unit (laser) is malfunctioning. Please check the type of optical and provide a replacement in order to repair the unit.
