One of the more common problems with printers as it relates to paper jams, is that the paper stacked in the tray hasn't been fanned. What I mean is, it's like holding a paper-back book in your hand and skimming quickly through the pages with your thumb as your other hand holds it at the spine. Try this as a remedy if your printer jams often.
This Brother printer could have a piece of paper stuck in it. When a paper jams, assemble the jammed page pieces to make sure all the pieces came out. A jammed paper can also knock loose the paper detect arm that senses a paper in the machine. This detect arm is usually near the platen (The roller the print head prints against) to detect paper in the machine. If this arm is stuck, it could be sensing paper when there is none. Rubber paper rollers should all be cleaned with rubbing alcohol or a mild soap solution (I use Windex) to prevent feed jamming.
Every 120,000 pages, the paper feed rollers, fuser, transfer roller, and OPC belt cartridge should be replaced, usually by a trained techncian.
Fuser and OPC belt units are customer-replacable.
The multiple feeding of the paper into the printer is due to a worn paper separation pad. part no. LM0711001. If the machine is picking up the paper okay and the jams occur solely from multiple sheet feeding, then this part is probably all you will need. The steps required to access and remove & replace the separation pad unfortunately is about 10 steps. Better consult a tech.
Does it feed sometimes, and just jams frequently, or every single page? Are you sure the paper size in the tray is set correctly? Otherwise for frequent or constant jams when the paper simply stays in the tray, then the feed rollers are likely worn out.
Open the top where you exchange the cartridges, then check to see that those little cogs keeping the paper in place are'nt oily or jammed, If worse comes to worse, take it to a curcuit city or a geek squad.
