Pioneer DV-340/343 users: playing VCD's and the players display for Chapter/Time

By Phoebe - usenet poster

I have been tinkering with VCD's and have noticed that when I play one
on my Pioneer DV-340 the display on the player just says: "play" and
no chapter and time indication, but chapters I made are accessible,
but I would like to see on the display what chapter and time is
playing, that is not possible with use of PBC (PlayBackControl) the
only way I can get a time indication is start the VCD with pressing
"1", but than the "Next" button won't work, it stays on chapter 1.
I hope I'm making some sense here...

Is there a way to create a VCD with the flexibility of a DVD? With al
indications of chapters and time visible on the player's display?

I've been working with programs like: TSCV, VCDEasy,
MPEGSequenceMaker, Nero 5.5.4.0. with Nero's menus I cant "next" to
the next menu, it stays frozen on 1/3 in stead going to 2/3.

What am I doing wrong?

William.

Same here. I have to press "1" to disable PBC, otherwise there is no track
indication and an excessive delay between tracks. VCDs burned with
WinOnCD.

The effect goes away if you burn "VideoCD version 1.0" instead of
"version 2.0". Most burning software choses version 2 by default and might
not even support the older version 1.

Pressing "1" is not too inconvenient, though, if you do care about the
VideoCD 2 features like menus, stills, etc.

I would like to add to the wishlist: Is there software that can put index
marks on VCD tracks?  I have software that can do that for audio CDs.  My
DVD/VCD/CD player supports jumping to index marks within VCD tracks, so
this would be very useful for organizing tracks without having to start a
new track on the VCD. There is always a small delay between tracks (even
without PBC), so organizing a continuous program by splitting it in tracks
is not a good solution.

I find Nero inferior for making VCDs. Also had various problems with
playback control and navigation with Nero disks.

Forgot to mention: I have a Sony player, model D??-S300, made ca. 1998. So
this feature/problem is not limited to Pioneer.

Play Back Control.
It controls the way a VCD is to be played, menus and such.

Do you know if other brand DVD players have the same 'problem' or do
they all just display 'play' when a PBC disk is inserted?

I will try that...

just the thing I am currently looking for on the net: How to insert
entry-points in a video MPEG sequence, and the Pioneer must be able to
skip chapters without using PBC, so we can see the chapter/time
indication on the display.

Yes I will e-mail Ahead and ask them about those menu's that won't
move after you press "next"

Thanks,

William.
