Have a HP2610 and Dell Vostro 1500 running Vista. Have had problem since day one with the HP printer software. Laptop goes to and from office and home. HP is at home. USB connection. Sometimes it works ok, but most times the printer icon is gone from printer choices. It disappears completely. To fix, I sometimes I have to uninstall the software, then reinstall. System also asks for serial port driver for USB. This is madness, and I believe a compatibility problem between HP driver and Vista. Any fixes?

Try hp's website if you are talking about a driver for the printer. Or Dell's website if the WIA is something in windows.

Boot to the F12 menu, see if you can boot to the HDD diagnostics. If not, boot to the Dell Resource CD, run the HDD diagnostics from there. If Diags fail, replace the HDD. If they pass, boot to the Vista DVD, then run a repair of the operating system
Make sure you dont have the laptop muted. Seems simple, but ive caught myself with a muted computer before. First, check to see if your computer is muted, by looking at the little speaker icon by the clock. if there is no speaker there, go into control panel> sounds and audio devices, and check there. Lastly if you have no sound, check your media player, because the player itself can be muted/turned down as well. I hope that helps
For using xp you must have the correct drivers. These should be available for download from the Dell support website. You may also find updating windows xp will help you may be using service pack one, so make sure all updates are done.
If you have to load drivers you should load the chipset first followed by the graphics then the sound. Check on your hardware list under system in control panel that there are no conflicts.
I hope this is helpful please rate the assistance given.
Did you download the latest audio drivers from Dell.com? If not here is the link to the drivers for that device based off Vostro 1400 using Vista 32 bit Edition.
