The cause is a bad blue TFT panel in the light engine. Unfortunately the only solution is to replace the entire assembly. It is available at http://www.encompass.com I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4251975-replace_dlp_light_engine which explains how to remove and install a new light engine as well as where to get the parts. I have the same KDF60XS955 sony and have the same problem. I called sony customer support and was told there was a recall on the optical block for this tv. But the recall ended in Dec. of 2008. I was upset that they did not call or send out a notice to me. They should of had my information because I had a different issue that they sent someone out to fix a few years ago. They said it was an expensive fix, like over 1000 dollars. Instead of fixing it they offered me a deal on a smaller tv, a 52 inch sony. I could buy that one at a discount which is about 1100 dollars. I told them that I thought that was the worst deal I have ever heard of. Why would I spend about 4000 dollars for a tv 4 years ago only to be told that I could buy a smaller one today for 1100 dollars more. I said if I bought that 52 inch tv today, what would happen 4 years from today, am I going to be offered an even smaller one for more money again? I thought I was buying a top of the line tv back then, I only wished it would have lasted longer than this. Not happy!
I had this exact same issue with mine. Started noticing the "blue cloud" on the bottom portion of the screen.
Please follow this link and the instructions listed. I opted for an "upgrade" that was offered (brand new 46" bravia lcd) but sony had also offered to fix my tv for free.
I had the same problem with my 4 yr old Sony KDF60WF655 rear projection set, and I was fortunate to buy a 4 year extended warranty - because it was the $1300. (not incl labor), Optic Block that was replaced to fix the problem. That part contains all new LCDs, & Lens & some electronics. I had already got a new bulb (under warranty) a few weeks earlier, that I had not yet installed so the service guy did replace that as well. (This happened 3 weeks before my warranty ended)
He told me that he replaces hundreds of Sony Optic Blocks every year and that many Sony Rear Projection sets have FACTORY extended warranties because of some known problems with the blue LCD panels.
The tech checked my Service Codes & showed me the TV had been running for 10051 hours in about 4 years - on the Original bulb! He was quite surprised because he said the bulbs usually last about 5000 - 7000 hours. He also said it's good to replace them BEFORE they go bad, because they can sometimes burn out the amplifier that powers the bulb, (which is a seperate piece that attaches to the outside of the Optic Block). My TV is like new now.
