This unit burner will not light. The igniter comes on & stays on for about 5 seconds & then goes out. The gas valve does not open (it appears) The timer has been replaced & no help, but the first time it was started after the timer replaced the burner did come on for a minute or so. Any help appreciated

Re: Whirlpool Model LG5801XK Gas clothes dryer
First ck gas to unit, next is ck the coils on the burner valve right, there(i just looked up and this is an older unit) set of coils is about $85, the entire burner valve including coils and new ignitor is about $135.that would be my bet the whole thing but is it worth it putting 135 into the dryer

Whirlpools are great. There is a flame sensor near the igniter, it gets dusty and can't sense the flame. Carefully wipe it off, without bumping the igniter, it's super delicate. Sometimes the sensor can be removed for cleaning, just held in place by a little screw.
Well there are two main sources for this to happen # 1 The igniter can go bad if you can view the burner area turn unit on and watch for glowing ignitor,< takes a few seconds > if ignitor comes on and goes off without lighting burners then #2 flame sensor,< located on burner rail it attaches with one wire>, remove the one screw holding it on rail and remove,< clean it by scraping with sharp knife or something with an edge to it until it appears to be fresh metalic look. replace and try again and if this does not work then gas valve is probably source of failure.
coils on the gas valve, especially the single coils that whirlpool uses, break down after use. They may ohm out good when cold and the burner may light 1, 2, or 3 times, then you get ignition failure. Coils are bad. Hint when replacing coils. the front coil which has 3 terminals has a metal sleeve inside the coil. Make sure that sleeve stays with the valve. It can get stuck in the old coil and thrown away.
