Question about Frigidaire PLMV169DC Microwave Oven

Popping and shooting sparks

This is a new microwave. Since it was installed, whenever we turn it on, it pops really loudly, and shoots blue sparks immediately upon hitting the start button, then it works fine. I have had it looked at by a repairman, who stated that he could not find any signs of sparking wiring, and the microwave never popped or sparked at all while he was there. Three days later when I used it again, it popped and shot sparks. Whats up with this?

AFter reading your reply, I decided to pay more attention when I was using the microwave, and sure enough the next time I used it, it popped really really bad, and I noticed that I had food cooking on the stove that was steaming pretty good, it had moisture on the microwave, so we may be on to something. I plan on watching it for a while more before I call the manufacturer back. I have until June before the warranty runs out. My question is shouldnt an over the range microwave be designed to handle any mositure that comes from cooking on the stove?

I'm having the exact same problem. Brand new and has sparked from day one (now about a month old). No food or moisture. Sometimes I can open the door to stop, then start it up again and it's fine. It's a zapping noise and light, that happens like clockwork, about every second. It reminds me of a mosquito zapper.

I had the same sparking problem with a Bosch 5050. Replaced the mica cover after cleaning the cavity, but did not solve the problem,
Any other ideas?

My microwave was "unrepairable" by the local authorized Electrolux service center. Frigidaire is in the process of replacing it. So, if yours sparks, don't assume it's food and moisture.

I have a brand new Frigidaire Microwave and it sparks. No food or moisture... The repair people are coming out in the morning to fix the dish washer as well. All new appliances and two of them are broke

we have the exact same problem. Our unit is 3 years old and has done this for quite some time. It definitely only occurs when we have a steaming hot pot on the stove below. Kinda scary.

Hi There!
Check behind the "Wave Guide Cover" on the inside cavity. There may be moisture or food residue behind it. Should be a cover that is plastic or Mica. Really strange that it's sparking being new. Also check that you use plates without gold or silver trimmings (Crockery or porcelein). This will also cause sparking. Remember that microwaves will always go to the first organic source in its path. The wave guide cover, if soiled, is very close to the tip of the Magnetron and will therefor result in arcing. Good Luck, JUS004

Sure they can handle a lot of steam. It,s the fatty substances in the food that goes up with the steam and clings to the insides.

Did you find the little cover inside the microwave? It's a cover rectangular in shape and approx. 7cm in length. normally white or cream in colour. Either screws on or clips into position. Behind that you may find the culprit. Also check for burn marks on the door or inside the cavity. Let me know when you find it and problem solved. JUS004

When the unit is turned on it shoots flames from the roof of the unit WHY?

It sound like the antenna behind the plastic plate may be warped and touching the cavity. From my experience when they start shooting sparks it is time for a new microwave.

Suddenly microwave stopped working

(would really like more info- digital number dead as well?)

(assuming completely dead) Could be a couple of things:
- blown fuses (inside, relatively easy to replace, std size avail at Raioshack) <-- most likely
- cut/loose power cord connection inside.
- (unlikely but worse case scenario) Door was closed crooked- one tong hit one door switch before the other- causing a short circuit internally that "self destructs" the microwave to prevent it ever operating with an open (or even crookedly ajar) door, irradiating any users. Typically it just blows the fuses, but if fuses blow immediately upon replacing and turning power on, then possibly one of the switches fused or melted internally, and needs to be replaced.

Was boiling water and running microwave and a popping sound and blue spark appeared, it still seams to be functioning normally but am worried about what happened???

if you mean you were boiling water in a microwave, then A) that is a dangerous thing to do as any liquid in a microwave is very volatile and B) were the dishes ,containers etc you had in the microwave free of all metal? as that is what would have made the blue spark , when the microwaves connect with metal

No, Your better off buying a new one. Sounds like the Magnetron is acting up and that is the most important and dangerous piece of hardware in the Microwave.
