First - re-seat the harddisk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot andgo into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If itdoesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.
Next - to check if the harddrive is faulty, remove the hard drive and insert it into an USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a workingcomputer's USB port. If this computer cannot see itas an external hard drive and you cannot open the various folders and files, this confirms the hard drive is faulty.
Then the hard drive needsto be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer orlaptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioningcomputer/laptop again.
Replacing the hard drive is not too difficult. You will need the operating system disc to reinstall windows or you could try a free Linux (like Ubuntu) operating system. On the bottom of the laptop there is a 2 access panels the small one is the memory and the larger is the hard drive. You just need to remove the screw and and the hard drive will be below. You just need to see what type it is by the connection. There are 2 types IDE or SATA; Ide had a wide ribbon connector and SATA has a small connector. The old hard drive will also have the type stamped on the label. You should go will a larger capacity than what was in there. For example if you have a 250GB you can add a larger 750GB or more. Make sure the power is off and remove the battery before starting the process. If you just need more storage and the old hard drive is still working you could just buy an external usb hard drive and keep all your pictures and music on that. Thanks for using FixYa
The maximum size hard disk you can install in your Toshiba depends upon the BIOS. The BIOS can support a hard disk up to a certain capacity. Check the specification of your model Toshiba to see the maximum hard drive it can support.
An alternative -
You can use an external USB hard drive and connect it to your Toshiba and not be restricted by the BIOS. You can use USB hard drive 500 Mb to more than 1 Tb.
The other advantage of using an external USB hard drive is you do not need to install Windows, the device drivers and your programs on the new hard drive.
There are 2 issues, One is hardware and the second is software. First check if is well installed upon the bios. Sometime you will need to download third party software(pre-boot bios software) to make it run correctly. Some model of laptop support small size hard disk. So you will have to use utility like "ezdrive" or "maxblast.exe" corresponding the make of hard-disk and the model you are using. Now while installing windows create partition for the operating system separately Some old version of xp sp2 support 137gb maximum size, so check this... Cheers uttam
